God of War Ragnarok: Every Spartan Fury, Ranked

God of war didn't invent activated states in hack and slash games, although the series is the reason many of them use L3+R3 to activate them. Each game presented its own take on this state of rage, whether it was the original Rage of the Gods, GoW2Enhanced Fury of the Titans, or GoW3's fiddlier Fury of Sparta. Then 2018 God of war the game changed everything from the nordic setting to the new, melee combat.

All Kratos has left in the new game is Spartan Rage, where he sees red and punches everything in front of him. It was fun and comfortable, but could do with some expansion. God of War Ragnarok players can now choose between 3 different types of Spartan Rage, each with their own pros and cons. Players have found different uses for each, though some are better suited to general combat than others. So here's every Spartan Rage, ranked by their overall versatility.

4 Heritage

Driven by the wrath of Sparta

• Appears in: Valhalla – Homecoming.
• This allows Kratos to use the Blade of Olympus in battle.
• Does not cure status ailments when activated.

Heritage appears in the Chamber of Sacrifice during the Valhalla DLC. Therefore, it can only be used in the main campaign in New Game+. It also has no enchantment of its own, unlike the Valor, Wrath, and Rage boons. But this allows Kratos to use the Blade of Olympus, the giant sword that Zeus used to banish the Titans to Tartarus, and the one that Kratos used to single-handedly slay several gods and Titans. This was the basis for his Fury of Sparta GoW3so it was fitting to bring him back here as a new form of Rage.

The Blade's slow, sluggish attacks are compensated by its power, as it has more base power than Kratos' normal weapon. It also lasts the longest of all Rages, slowly draining the meter while it is in use. It also heals Kratos a bit with each successful parry and charged attack; that's good since it's the only way it will grant health, since unlike other Furies it won't grant health gain on activation or dispel status ailments.

The blade is more like Kratos getting a weapon that costs Rage to use, rather than a Rage and limited use state. Since it can only be used in NG+ after defeating Valhalla, by then it will likely be weaker than Kratos' upgraded weapons, let alone the other Furies. Still, at least it will give players a chance to spend their leftover ingredients and silver after they've finished leveling up everything else.

3 Bravery

Saves lovers and rewards experience

• Appears in: Chapter 5 – The Lost Sanctuary.
• Exchanges rage for health and can parry enemy attacks for more health and strength gains.
• Cures status ailments when activated.

Bravery appears throughout the game when Vanadis interrupts Kratos' meeting with Atreus after his journey to Jotunheim. This allows the player to spend a bit of rage to restore some health, and when used right before an enemy attacks, it will negate the attack's damage, stun the enemy, gain more health, and give the player a short attack boost as well. This can be very useful when Kratos is low on health, or to avoid being severely punished if attacked.

However, its power and healing buffs only come if the player activates it at the right time. If they screw up the time, they get nothing for their efforts. It also works best with certain enchantments, though they can increase the risk as well as the reward. For example, the prowess of valor increases the strength buff and allows Kratos to steal health from his enemies for a while, but in return reduces the valor's ability to heal.

New players can use it as a quick heal during or after fights with groups of enemies. However, only experienced players will get the most out of it thanks to the drastic time increases and risky charms.

2 Anger

A big outburst of anger

• Appears in: Chapter 11 – The Liberation of Hel.
• Spends rage on one large attack with Kratos' weapon.
• Cures status ailments when activated and doubles damage to affected enemies with enchantments.

Anger this is the last Wrath to appear in the base game, appearing after Kratos had to defend Sindra's home from Helwalkers after Atreus wreaked havoc on Helheim. It's also the easiest, as it allows Kratos to spend rage on one big offensive attack with his equipped weapon. Where Valor was all about careful defense, Wrath was all about overt attack, amplifying weapon effects as well as damage (such as extra frost with Leviathan's Axe, burn with Blades of Chaos, etc.).

It will even restore half of Kratos' rage meter if the player misses an attack, and Boon of Wrath will double the damage dealt to enemies with status ailments. His activation shockwave will basically absorb their suffering to make the Wrath attack stronger. However, Wrath only really works on one enemy at a time, so it's not too good in group encounters. Unless he has a specific enemy that gives Kratos more trouble than others, such as the Noken and their healing songs.

Used carefully, it can effectively hack the boss's health bar, especially if the player has an upgraded weapon. Although, since it's all about offense, it won't do much damage to Kratos' health. The best it can do on this front is remove status ailments like other Rages. So, if players prefer to catch the eye of their enemies, Wrath will fit them perfectly.

1 Rage

Cruelty with bare hands

• Appears in: Chapter 1- Survive in Fimbulwinter.
• This allows the player to attack with the Trigger & Bumper buttons in a constant barrage.
• Cures status ailments when activated.

Other Rages tried to reinvent the wheel, but they couldn't replace the old, reliable one Rage. This is Kratos' base Rage form, which starts with and as in GoW In 2018, Kratos has put away his weapons to simply beat up his enemies with his fists. Each hit allows him to recover a little bit of health, and the buffs help reduce the amount of rage each hit costs, allowing him to last longer.

It's a versatile option that provides decent health and deals decent damage to enemies, which can be enough on its own. For example, it offsets the drawbacks of Berserk's Resurrection Stone (which revives Kratos with more rage than health), as its activation can allow Kratos to hit an enemy enough times to bring his health back to green.

It doesn't require careful timing like Valor, and it doesn't end with one powerful blow like Wrath. Beginners and veterans alike can simply turn it on and press buttons until it's finished; though they can turn it off partially if they want to save some anger for later. Players can experiment with Valor and Rage and find the right builds that will make the most of them, but Rage will guide players through almost every encounter.
