Key conclusions
- PS5 Pro's AI upscaling and PSSR feature could improve Space Marine 2's graphics and framerate.
- CCO Studio is optimistic about the PS5 Pro's performance and hopes for a higher frame rate.
- The PS5 Pro's potential to expand its graphical capabilities could make Space Marine 2 better than ever.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is one of the most popular titles of 2024, and it looks like this title has a bright future, especially for the PS5 Pro. Space Marine 2 already has impressive graphics, but there's hope that a few new PS5 Pro features will take the game's visuals to the next level.
The PS5 Pro is Sony's latest console, which is scheduled for release on November 7th and uses a number of advanced technologies, including AI upscaling for both graphics and frame rates. PlayStation claims the console will be the “most visually impressive” way to experience PlayStation games, but many fans and developers have expressed concern over the PS5 Pro's high price and lack of a physical disc drive. Other developers are more optimistic about the PS5 Pro.
In an interview with IGN, the studio's chief creative officer Tim Willits expressed optimism about the future of the game's performance on the upcoming PS5 Pro, paying particular attention to frame rates and the new PSSR Pro feature. “What I'm excited about is the upscaling of the graphics with artificial intelligence,” he said, “I've got my AMD machine (…) and the game looks pretty damn good. But when I'm playing on the PS5, I'm playing a play.”
Space Marine 2 can be taken to the next level with PSSR
Willits went on to explain that the Xbox Series X typically outperforms its PS5 counterpart by around 10-15fps, despite both targeting the same settings and resolutions. These problems were especially prevalent in very complex scenes, such as when large hordes of enemies appeared or when using a flamethrower. Similar to Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's Fluid Motion Frames, the PS5 Pro's PSSR frame generation is expected to deliver a significantly higher frame rate without any noticeable loss in quality or resolution.
Admitting that he's no tech guru, Willits hoped that even in the PS5 Pro's performance mode, Space Marine 2 will look better than the current console quality mode. The PS5 Pro's improved GPU will also bring increased graphics capabilities to the console, meaning that combined with a higher PSSR frame rate, Space Marine 2 might look better than ever on a future console. However, there are no plans to move the game to the PS5 Pro Enhanced list just yet.
Space Marine 2 continues to enjoy great success, with DLC and major updates on the horizon. Either way, players can rest assured that the developers are doing their best to ensure that the game is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to graphics and performance. Whether this will make a big difference to players remains to be seen Space Marine 2 sold well around the world, and the game, as before, received mostly positive reviews.
