Wild Bastards Review

Back in May 2019, developer Blue Manchu released a roguelike first-person shooter called Bastards of the Void a memorable name for a memorable game. Bastards of the Void was met with much love from critics and fans alike after its debut in 2019, and five years later, Blue Manchu is back with another brilliant roguelike adventure. But for now Wild bastards shares the same style and tone as its spiritual predecessor, there are some big differences when it comes to gameplay.

in short Wild bastards is a roguelike first-person shooter Bastards of the Voidbut it has an added level of turn-based strategy that its predecessor didn't have. It gives Wild bastards a completely different sense of pacing, and while that may disappoint some fans, there's plenty more to check out. However, not all Wild bastardselements have a satisfactory effect.

“Wild Bastards” with an exciting sci-fi narrative

After a very short prologue, Wild bastards' the basic premise is revealed, and it's a pretty engaging, classic sci-fi/western tale. Players must travel the galaxy and collect the souls of their dead former crew members aboard the mysterious sentient ship The Drifter in hopes of eventually reaching the Promised Land, a haven for bots, mutants, and xenos.

Wild bastards“The story is simple but effective and gives the player a strong incentive to keep hurtling through the galaxy. There are also a lot of fun little sci-fi explanations for the gameplay in the universe, like understanding The Drifter is the reason for the game's Roguelike cycle. Wild bastards' the main campaign took about 9 hours to beat on normal difficulty.

Wild bastards there's also a procedural campaign mode, a challenge mode, and an Iron Man mode if players want an even tougher challenge. These extra modes are a nice addition that helps the game feel like a complete package, but their modifiers won't change the core loop that much.

Wild Bastard's gameplay loop bites off more than it can chew

Wild bastards throws players into the deep end, and he's not afraid to let them wallow for a while. from the beginning Wild bastards gives players quite a few overlapping systems, and they often have to figure it out on their own early in the game. It makes a terrible first impression.

But after a round or two, Wild bastardsThe initial obstacle begins to disappear, and an exciting loop of the game appears. Soon, players will enter the rhythm of the warp into a new sector in search of a new thief to unlock and begin the long process of rescuing them. Once in a new sector, players must plan their route through the stars, with each planet offering a key upgrade along the way. Once above the planet, players head to the surface, and here's where Wild bastardsNew turn-based strategy elements come into play.

Players with a party of 1–4 enter a board game-like planet with key points of interest located along linear paths. Players have a certain number of moves per turn, and the overall goal is to grab as much loot, upgrades, mods, and valuable resources as possible before a powerful boss arrives to hunt them down and force them to leave the planet empty-handed.

As well as upgrades, resources and utility tiles that restore a player's movement or health, Wild bastards' The board game-like planet maps are peppered with combat encounters such as roadblocks and enemy patrols. Achieving one of these combat encounters forces players to engage in a challenging first-person skirmish where they must kill all enemies in order to advance.

This basic loop repeats for Wild bastards' completely, but it remains quite engaging thanks to its many overlapping progression systems and evolving mechanics. In each sector, players will encounter at least one new gameplay mechanic. These can be permanent power-ups such as aces, tonics that give the player the ability to heal team members, and the Pal/Feud system that sees the player's gang of rogues drop out or befriend each other at random intervals. This mechanic, which is drip-fed to the player throughout the game, creates a sense of reward that is key to a Roguelike, but it's not exactly perfect.

The main problem with Wild bastardsThe gameplay loop is that unlocking these mechanics is immediately beneficial, some of them don't affect the gameplay that much. The Pal/Feud system is probably the best example of this. Initially, this system seems very deep, with players presented with a large chart explaining who is at odds with whom and who is friends with whom, all shown through the various lines connecting the Outlaws icons.

At the beginning of the game, it is important which characters are at war, since they cannot go down together. But once a player unlocks six or more rogues, this system can be forgotten as they'll always have a duo they're happy with, no matter who the enemy is. In this case, this means that Baba's resource is almost redundant, as the player will rarely need them to heal enmity. This criticism extends to quite a few Wild bastards“gameplay mechanics that many enjoy unlocking but end up lacking the depth needed to keep them interesting throughout the game.

Unfortunately, with such a lack of depth, Wild bastards» The gameplay loop can start to feel repetitive after a few hours. This is especially true if players don't like the turn-based nature of the game's planet map, where it takes up a large portion of the gameplay.

Wild Bastard Outlaws are a jumbled mass of likeable rogues

As the name suggests, a large part Wild bastardsthe story and gameplay depend on the Outlaws cast. During the game's main campaign, players will discover a total of 13 playable Outlaws. Like its spiritual predecessor, Wild bastardsThe distinct comic-book-like art style does a good job of making each of the game's 13 Outlaws stand out, and the game's voice acting goes a long way in reinforcing the characters' individuality.

In terms of gameplay, each robber has unique weapons and special abilities. In theory, this means that Wild bastards offers 13 different play styles. But again, everything is not as good as it seems at first glance. in reality Wild bastards' 13 Outlaws is a mixed game, at least in terms of gameplay. For now Wild bastards it's home to a lot of useful characters that have powerful, versatile weapons and special abilities that are very satisfying to use, but it's also home to a few good characters that just shouldn't be taken into battle.

While opinions on certain Outlaws will vary depending on a player's preferred first-person shooter playstyle, there are some Outlaws that are objectively weaker than the rest. For example, Smokey's flame spewing shot looks cool, but it's incredibly weak and its cooldown is way too long. In a standard FPS, these features will not be a serious problem, but Wild bastards it's a challenging game where every shot counts. There's simply no room for weak rogues in a squad, as weak rogues mean quick death, and death means a sudden end to the run, the need to restart, and an overwhelming sense of frustration that quickly clouds the entire experience.

Unfortunately, this leads to Wild bastards“The list feels a little unbalanced, and around the halfway point, players will find their favorite set of four rogues and likely ignore a large portion of the list. That being said, things get better with the game's Ace upgrade system, which gives Outlaws powerful stat boosts and new abilities. These aces go a long way toward making the weakest rogues on the list more tolerable, but it still won't convince players to switch their favorite four.

Wild Bastards takes more shots than it misses, but it's very close

Wild Bastards casino gameplay

Wild bastards this is a very bright, very ambitious game that does everything possible to add new game mechanics and playable characters. But while these efforts are certainly commendable, there's no denying that many of these elements just don't hit as hard as they should. There's still plenty of room for fans to have a good time Wild bastardsbut this time will not be without moments of confusion, frustration and a little boredom.

Wild bastards is available now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Game Rant received a PS5 code for this review.
