So who is Ichiro (besides being “That Guy from the Radio Club”)? He covered several sports events, including artistic gymnastics combat and figure skating team combat. Ichiro will likely get more airtime with every martial arts confrontation Ranma and Akane face. But will Ichiro play a more prominent role in the Ranma 1/2 does the plot move forward or is it just a narrative device?

Whenever important news hits Furinkan High School, Ichiro makes sure he's the first to cover it. Viewers first met the broadcasting club personality in Season 2 Episode 1, “I Hate Men”, when Ranma was bombarded with questions about his engagement to Akane. Obviously, Ichiro is a big part of Furinkan High's press office.

Since then, Ichiro has been the main character of the high school, featuring in several school clashes. His next significant appearance was in Episode 4 “Fighter” 1, when he narrated the heated confrontation between Ranma and Ryoga on the school field 2. After that, Ichiro returned for Kodachi Kuno's arc. Most recently, he provided color commentary at the Charlotte Cup.

While Ichiro was not directly affected Ranma 1/2 plot yet, fans can expect to see more of it in the future. After all, @ranma_pr teased Ichiro on X ahead of episode 2, revealing that his role is more than a supporting role.

Ichiro isn't much of a physical threat (he barely picked up Ryoga's umbrella before throwing his back). However, Ithiro's exploratory instincts are very dangerous to both Ranma and Ryoga. When a rookie reporter discovers their secret, the two cursed teenagers face a difficult future at Furinkan High.

Here's an interesting fact: Ichiro shares a connection with another IP address Rumiko Takahashi, Inuyasha. The Netflix series has cast Japanese voice actor Tomakazu Seki as Ithiro. And Seki's various credits include the role of Menomaru in the film The Inuyasha Movie: Affections Touched Through Time.

Seki is a voiceover veteran with an extensive resume. His anime roles include enigmatic characters such as Toya Kinamoto Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear the map and Panda in Jiu-jutsu Kaisen. It is also being dubbed by international releases, including the Disney blockbuster Encanto.

Given Seki's talent and experience, some fans believe that Ichiro was clearly written for him. Also, casting a well-known voice actor in your series can attract more viewers who are less familiar with them Ranma 1/2.

Regardless of Ichiro's role in the Ranma 1/2plot, there's no denying the character's comedic appeal. One of the great scenes from the series is Ichiro's recap at the beginning of Season 1, Episode 10, “Kiss of Death.” After talking about Akane and Ranma's first fight against Mikado Sanzenin and Azusa Shiratori, the announcer goes into a rapid fire of pop culture references:

For the record, this passage includes four references to '80s movies and television in less than seven seconds. Naturally, a member of the broadcasting club must consume a ton of media. (Which begs the question: Does Ichiro also attend drama club? How fun would that be what be an episode!)

The official Ranma (2024) website states that Ichiro is “known as a 'Word Wizard' because he can easily manipulate words.” After listening to his masterful use of imagery, antithesis, synonyms and homonyms – just in the episode 10 recap – there's no denying that Ichiro lives up to the title. It will be interesting to see what tricks the “word wizard” will come up with next!
