What is the ultimate Getsuga Tenshō?

Key conclusions

  • Ultimate Getsuga Tensho transforms Ichigo into Getsuga himself, stripping him of his Shinigami powers.
  • Mugetsu, the ultimate attack, wounds Aizen at his peak, but leaves Ichigo powerless.
  • The technique is a last resort that forces all of the user's spiritual power into one devastating attack.

Defeating Sosuke Aizen is one of the hardest things Ichigo Kurosaki has had to do, and it's by no means something he could have done alone. However, he needed to drastically improve his skills and strengthen his mindset to have a chance of defeating him, and to help him do so, his father Isshin taught him a powerful secret technique inherent to both of their Zanpakutō. : the final Getsuga Tenshō.

Using it allowed Ichigo to defeat Aizen, who had merged with the wish-granting Hogyoku, but it also had devastating consequences – using the Final Getsuga Tenshō strips the user of their Shinigami powers forever. So what is the Final Getsuga Tenshō technique all about? BLEACH?

Ultimate Getsuga Tensho

“In this 'final Getsuga Tenshō', I became a Getsuga myself. If I use this technique, I will lose all my Shinigami powers. That's what I mean by 'final'.'

The final Getsuga Tensho is Ichigo's Bankai technique, Tensa Zangetsu, in which Ichigo becomes a Getsuga (“Moon Fang”) himself. It's aptly named because it's a final technique that strips the user of an ability after use. While performing the technique, Ichigo's hair turns black and grows to his waist, and his torso, right arm, neck, and face are covered in a bluish-gray armor made of bandages (similar to the hilt-wrapping of the Zangetsu state). His left arm is covered in black flame-like spots that spread to visible parts of his torso. The transformation is the result of Ichigo's fusion with Getsuga; thus becoming one with the manifestation of his Zanpakutō, Zangetsu (“Killing Moon”).

While training with the Visor, Ichigo finds Hollow Ichigo (a manifestation of his Shinigami powers inherited from his father mixed with reishi from his mother's encounter with White) instead of Old Zangetsu (which is actually a manifestation of his Quincy powers). Pauly Ichigo explained that he and “Old Zangetsu” are one and the same, share the same spirit body, and mirror each other like night and day. Despite this, for the most part BLEACHboth act as two separate entities, much like Yhwach and his right-hand man, Jugram Haschwalth. During Dangai's training with Isshin, Ichigo encountered an empty Tenso Zangetsu, which was the result of the two sides combining, representing all of Ichigo's powers.

Ichigo vs Zangetsu Bleach

Final Getsuga Tenshō allows its user to perform Mugetsu (“Moonless Sky”), a devastating attack that creates a black reiatsu blade that erupts from his hand. When Ichigo swings this reiatsu sword, it is powerful enough to injure Aizen at his highest evolutionary stage and cause him to regenerate at the previous point in his evolutionary trajectory. Mugetsu can be seen as the culmination of all of its user's spiritual power, forcing everything into a single attack, similar to the normal Getsuga Tensho. Once Mugetsu is performed, the transformation is complete and the user experiences excruciating pain followed by unconsciousness. The user will wake up after about a month, and any remaining spiritual power will stabilize before completely dissipating, leaving them with no spiritual abilities for the rest of their lives unless they have some special circumstances like Ichigo.

Although he had lost his Shinigami powers, the various sources of his spiritual powers meant that his spiritual power began to slowly build up in a dark corner of his soul over the 17 months following Aizen's defeat. Sousuke Aizen fused with the Hogyoku, who is able to manifest the wishes of the powerful, allowing him to overcome the limitations of the Shinigami and the Void, which are traditionally opposite existences.

In doing so, Aizen believed that he was transforming into an ideal existence that we now better understand as something akin to a multiple existence that was the Soul King, who was the progenitor of all races and the creator BLEACH universe Simply put, Aizen has become an insanely powerful way to combine the strengths of the pinnacle versions of multiple lifeforms. Although Ichigo used the Final Getsuga Tenshō to end their battle, he was ultimately unable to defeat Aizen, whose demise was the result of Urahara's efforts and Hogyoku's own refusal, allowing him to simply grab and throw him into Muken . Given its use as a last attack, it can be compared to the now obsolete Quincy: Letzt Stil.
