Hunter x Hunter: The Next Prince to Die in the War of Succession Explained
With the succession war raging, the death of one of the Kakin princes is almost inevitable in HxH.
The Succession Contest arc could very well mark the end of Chrollo, as Togashi has been hinting at it recently. This could mean not only his death, but the complete destruction of the Phantom Troupe.
Who is Chrolo Lucilfer?
- Head of the troupe “Phantom”.
- Skill Hunter user
Chrolo Lucilfer was one of the most interesting antagonists in the Hunter x Hunter manga and anime. He was first mentioned during the Heaven's Arena arc, but made his full debut during the Yorknew City arc, the first major arc for the Phantom Troupe. As fans know, Hrola is the leader of the Phantom Troupe, also known as the Spider.
Crolla and the troupe's founding members, which included Franklin, Uwogin, Pakunoda, Machi, Feiton, Nobunaga, and Shalnark, formed the troupe after events that occurred during their childhoods in Meteor City. Sarsa's kidnapping and death had a profound effect on Chrol and the others, and it all started with a desire for revenge. The Phantom Troupe was involved in many events, including the massacre of Kurt's clan, tying them to Kurapika and his own desire to get revenge on them for what they did to his clan. In fact, the troupe has already lost 2 of its members to him, and there may be more in the future.
Chrollo is a powerful Nen user, and possibly one of the best ever seen in the Hunter x Hunter series. As a specialist, he has a very interesting and powerful ability that makes him as versatile and powerful as he is. Chrollo Nen's Skill Hunter is one of the best in the series. Skill Hunter is a specialization-type Nen ability, and it allows Chrollo to steal other characters' Nen abilities if the conditions are met. Hrola must observe how the Nen ability works and he must ask the user questions about their Nen ability. He also has to get the victim to put their hand over the handprint in his book, and most importantly, it all has to be completed in one hour or less. Fans have seen many interesting abilities of Chrol, and he has much more to show off in the future. Some of his stolen abilities include Nen's abilities such as indoor fish, fun fun clothes, and sun and moon among others.
Chrol and Hisoka's relationship
- Hrol killed Hisoka once
- Hisoka killed two members of the Phantom troupe
In the Heaven's Arena arc, it was revealed that Hisoka is part of the Phantom Troupe, specifically Number 4 Spider. However, despite being a member, Hisoka only joined with ulterior motives, as he had no interest in the Corps and simply wanted to fight its leader, Chrol. At the end of the New York City arc, Hrola lost access to his Nen due to Kurapika, meaning Hisoka couldn't fight him. This meant that their fight would have to wait a while until Hrola was able to get this restriction removed from his Nen with the help of an exorcist, which happened sometime after what happened on Greed Island.

Hisoka missed fighting the powerful chimera ants in HxH. Togashi shows why.
Hisoka and Hrola will finally come face to face in the current arc. The two continued to fight to the death in the Heavenly Arena. Due to the fact that Hrola had prepared very carefully for this fight and even borrowed abilities from his troupe friends Shalnark and Potato, this fight should have ended in his victory despite Hisoka's extreme skill. This fight ended in Hisoka's death. However, the latter was eventually revived by Nen Bunji Gam's posthumous ability. The first thing Hisoka did after reviving was to eliminate Shallnark and Potato so that Hrola could never use their abilities again. Hisoka had a new bloodlust for the Phantom Corps.
Even if I die… this is the very idea that instills the fear of the spider I designed..!! — Chrola Lucilfer
This put the Corpse on the hunt for Hisoka to avenge their fallen members, and both the Corpse and Hisoka ended up on the Black Whale, with a confrontation potentially brewing.
Hrol's death in Hunter x Hunter may be on the way
Hrolah will die to kill Hisoka
Krolo did not take the death of his troupe friends Phantom, Shallnark, and Potato well at all. This is all the more true since their deaths occurred shortly after the deaths of Uvogin and Pakunoda during the York City arc. This sent Chrol into a more determined state to finish off Hisoka once and for all.
In theory, Hisoka is currently unkillable. It is unknown if there is a limit to how many times Hisoka can revive himself with the gum. This may mean that he cannot be killed by normal means. If Hrola wants to fight Hisoko again, he must find an ability that can counter this Nen's postmortem ability.
Hrola, who is currently on the Black Whale, plans to hunt for Kakin's treasure. These include the Seed Urn, Zen Buddha, and Divine Grace Blade. If Chrol manages to steal a national treasure, his Nen Skill Hunter ability will evolve. This will allow him to keep a very rare and powerful ability in his book. Whatever this ability is, Hrola is willing to sacrifice his life to destroy Hisoka. This ability that Chrolah is looking for can kill him, or at least affect him greatly.
If I die, one of you can replace me. And there may come a time when the foot is more important than the head. Make the right call. My orders are top priority. However, I am not your top priority. Our goal is to keep the spider alive, not the human. – Chrola
Hrola can also face Hisoka before he can get this rare ability, which means more than likely death for him since Hisoka is now much stronger. Either way, it seems like Togashi is orchestrating Chrol's death in this arc, with the possibility that the Phantom Corps will be left without a leader. It's possible that another member of the Phantom Troupe could also replace him as the new leader driving the Spider forward.
It's also possible that the entire ghost troupe will be destroyed, as that's the current goal of both Hisoka and Kurapika, and since it's unknown what good the ghost troupe would do in the story after Chrol Lucilfer's death and the characters' eventual arrival on the Dark Continent.
Crolla also talked about the priority being the Spider as a whole, rather than the head or individual members, possibly foreshadowing his own future demise.
Hunter x Hunter is available to read through Viz Media. Fans can read the series officially and for free on the Shonen Jump app and Manga Plus. The next Hunter x Hunter chapter, Hunter x Hunter Chapter 406, is scheduled for release on November 10, 2024.
