Between the long-standing relationships between the characters and small hints of past events, Oda has created a fascinating world that the audience just wants to know more about. Unfortunately, fans waited a long time for certain answers, but never got them.
One such answer is that One Piece the community is still desperate to know what Luffy's family really is. While it was revealed much earlier in the series that the hero of the Navy, Garp, and the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon, were Luffy's grandfather and father, respectively, no information about Luffy's mother was ever revealed. Crocodile and Luffy met for the first time during One Piece Alabaster Arch, where they fought for the fate of the desert kingdom. Serving as the arc's main villain and the first major threat to Luffy in the Great Line, Crocodile was eventually defeated by the Straw Hat Pirates, freeing the kingdom. While this seemed like a potential end to the story between the two characters, fans were given a reunion between Crocodile and Luffy when Luffy freed Crocodile from his Impel Down prison.

However, later during the Marineford arc Crocodile, now a member One Piece Cross Guild, was also found to have ties to Ivankov and the Revolutionary Army. In addition to this, Ivankov also seems to know a secret about the Crocodile that has not yet been revealed. The last time skip, no new information about the relationship between Luffy and Crocodile has been revealed, however, due to Crocodile's new status as one of the leaders of the Crusader Guild, more information about the character may be included in the Final Saga of the story.

From this small amount of information, some fans have come to the conclusion that Crocodile, one of the One Piece former warlord, Luffy's mother. First, these fans theorize that Crocodile was a woman during his time in the Revolutionary Army. Here Crocodile falls in love with Monkey D. Dragon, and the pair eventually gave birth to Luffy. Afterwards, Luffy is taken away from the dangerous life of the Revolutionary Army, where he is brought up by Garp and Dadan.

After the future captain v One Piece The Straw Hat Pirates are removed from the situation, then Crocodile approaches Ivankov. Fans then theorize that Crocodile wanted to become a man and asked the user of the fruit hormone to change his gender, which the revolutionary often does with One Piece gender-fluid characters. From here, Crocodile and Luffy would eventually meet again. Although it seems that Crocodile would know that he is fighting his own son, at this point in the show, Luffy and the rest of the world have no idea that his father is a Dragon.

Of course, this theory has many loopholes that make it so implausible in a turbulent world One Piece. During Marineford, it seems to be common knowledge that Luffy is the son of a Dragon. Despite this, the Crocodile doesn't react very strongly, seeing it more as an annoying pest that's just useful at the moment. However, at this point, Crocodile begins to help Luffy more, saving his life several times in the war, though it is more likely that Crocodile did these things because of his hatred for both Whitebeard and the World Government.

After all, it's more likely that Oda won't reveal that Crocodile is Luffy's mother in the final saga One Piece. In the absence of direct evidence, such a theory is best preserved One Piece insight rather than hard guesswork. Even so, the community is still fun to theorize about, creating the silliest but relevant guesses.
