POKEMON X KOGEI was curated by the National Crafts Museum, and the word “kogei” means traditional Japanese crafts. It features artwork by 20 different Japanese artists, with sculpture, paintings, ceramics, kimonos and more. Of course, everything is inspired by the world and the characters Pokemon franchise. The official website of the exhibition describes it as follows:
Put a Pokémon and a Kogei face to face, and what chemical reactions will occur? Twenty master craftsmen, from the Living National Treasure to the youth, seriously addressed this issue. Artworks that evoke the shapes, gestures, and touches of Pokemon. Artwork that harkens back to video game memories – evolution, trade, places to travel, super powerful moves. Plus invitations to Pokemon to become part of the vessels that decorate our daily lives, and even very cool outfits – kimono and obi buttons.
The result was about 70 works — all new works! What will your encounter with the works that await you in the exhibition gallery? Thrills, delight, smiles, awe? The power of multiplication goes again! Please enjoy the quantum leaps in beauty and technology it spawned.
All artwork featured in POKEMON X KOGEI are original to the show and have not been featured in any of the previous ones Pokemon art galleries. For Pokemon fans who feel like they've already seen it for years, which makes this show especially appealing. The pieces have such an original and unique design that brings Pokemon to life in a way no one has seen before.
Azabudai Hills Gallery is not the first venue POKEMON X KOGEI. Before arriving in Tokyo, the exhibition toured Japan in 2023 and 2024, stopping in Ichikawa, Shiga and Shizuoka prefectures. He even went overseas to the US and has been at JAPAN HOUSE in Los Angeles since July 2023. until January 2024. While there is no information on the official website whether Tokyo is the last stop of the exhibition or not at this time, there is a possibility that it will continue to other cities (or other countries) if you cannot make it to Tokyo by February.

Again trying to appeal to different generations and different types of people who may come to the museum, there is a huge variety of original items for sale. For fans who want a more traditional art gallery memento, there are painted plates, necklaces, coasters and fabric buttons inspired by works from the exhibition. There's even a limited number of special Pikachu plushies wearing kimonos with the traditional koji tsunagi pattern.
There are also pins with images of some of the different sculptures and even masking tape with artwork printed on it. One of the original merchandise designs features Pikachu and a Pokeball inside a circle, and this design can be found on bags, backpacks, mugs, and more. There are also mugs and key chains available, again featuring photos of some of the items found in the gallery. Finally, there are auctions where the original works of the participating artists are sold. POKEMON X KOGEI, but be aware that all information regarding these purchases is only available in Japanese (although the English version of the website does have a link to the Japanese page if you're interested).
