Until Dawn, along with Horizon Zero Dawn, will probably go down in history as the two modern games that don't need remakes/reworks in any way. Their original versions were perfectly playable on the PS5, they're both less than a decade old, and absolutely beautiful to look at. The only things these remasters really offer are improved performance and improved visuals, but in the case of Until Dawn, it doesn't even seem like the new remaster offers even that.
Over the past couple of days, as fans and content creators got their hands on the title early, there has been a lot of criticism on social media that the PS5 version of Until Dawn looks “much worse” than the original. For example, check out the comments section of a recent comparison video by YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits.
Many comments immediately pick up on the PS5 version's lighting, which appears to be much brighter, less gloomy and gloomy than the original. We can see some pretty drastic examples of this right at the beginning of the video, as the comparison honestly looks like it was made at different times of day. You can find a number of comments that joke about the lighting change, calling the game “It's already dawn” and “After dawn”.
There are also complaints about the general change in game atmosphere, which is not helped by this lighting change. One user claims that developer Ballistic Moon “completely ruined the atmosphere” of the game, while another says that the PS5 version of Until Dawn looks “much worse” than the original.
Until Dawn reportedly performs worse on PS5 as well
You could probably forgive some dodgy art direction if the game worked better than the original, but there seem to be some issues here as well. ShirrakoGaming first reported that the PS5 version of Until Dawn appears to have more bugs than the original and crashes more frequently.
Shiroko isn't the only person who feels this way either. Now that the game has launched, user reviews of the title on Steam have begun to trickle in, and at the time of writing, they've fallen to mixed. From the negative reviews, we see that several players are experiencing crashes, stuttering, screen tearing and other technical issues, with several reviews complaining about the terrible PSN requirements.
At this point, it doesn't seem like there's anything to try Until Dawn on PS5 right now, and that's without the mandatory $60 price tag. Unlike Horizon Zero Dawn, Until Dawn doesn't have a $10 upgrade option, which means you're paying full price for a pretty pointless remake that looks and works worse than the original. Yeah, I'll pass on that.
