The following article contains spoilers for Dr. Stone Science Future Episode 2 titled “Scientific journey“is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
When it comes to Dr. Stonewe've come to expect all science adventures with mind-blowing science experiments, big scenes and action on steroids, and speeds that make even a rocket look sluggish. However, Season 4 Episode 2 changed pace and literally takes a break — for the crew. This episode had all the makings of a fantasy sequel, but it veered much closer to the slice-of-life genre, giving viewers just a glimpse of happy normalcy before what appears to be a science-based tropical storm.
At its core, Dr. Stone is still unmatched in the sci-fi anime department. Not only does it give us comic relief, but it also teaches us science and weaves it into the plot. However, even this genius formula can sometimes develop slowly when the speed drops. Unfortunately, the latter is the case with Episode 2.

Dr. Stone Season 4 Episode 1: Fun Ride
Dr. Stone Season 4 kicks off with poker, science and laughs – a much-needed respite before the high-stakes action continues!
A breath of fresh air — or outdated science?
The one thing this episode 2 did great was give the audience a break. The episode is somewhat slow compared to the intense season 4 opener, but that was probably necessary to advance any storyline in the series. But it's hard not to feel like the show is capable of so much more. When you have such a grand show Dr. Stoneepisodes like this could easily be seen as “one of those in-between episodes”, but they do provide some progression to the story.
Viewers of the show have become accustomed to rapid jumps and amazing scientific demonstrations. What should have been a great sequel was a rather bland experience, offering glimpses of character transformation and new interpersonal relationships.
Slow Science and Mixed Drinks
How did no one get seasick?!
Francois took on the role of the crew's bartender of sorts, and it had to be one of the cutest scenes in the episode. It was great fun watching François mix up the appropriate cocktails for the team; at least it gave us an idea of the communication atmosphere aboard the ship. However, spending so much time on this particular subplot just felt like enjoying an overly long and unrelated side story.
The rest of the episode was pretty much the same, with some flashbacks and a focus on character development. These scenes were very touching in themselves, but I don't think they were as intense as one often expects from live shows. The writers are now cooling the tale for the release of the huge storyline, but the pace has strained the patience of fans.
The calm before the storm — is the momentum lost?
We could go for a ride
Let's be real: of all the shounen, Dr. Stone perhaps one series that relies heavily on momentum advantage. It's better if it's an action show that moves forward, pulling the audience along with the speed of the opening. The second episode was as leisurely as a Sunday morning walk in the park. While there's nothing wrong with that, and in most cases some fans might appreciate this approach, the lack of any scientific discoveries or major plot development made this episode rather bland.
That being said, it's safe to say that this is all part of a grand strategy and plan. Also known as the dossier before the storm, right? Since the film crew is currently in America, perhaps the most interesting scenes of the series are related to this episode. We can only hope that the next episode lives up to that promise.
America: The Promised Land. Well, eventually
The American Dream!
We have been eagerly waiting for this important moment and finally we saw the crew land in America. It was just a glimpse at the end, but it feels like we're in for something intense after the team has been slacking off for so long; something sinister must happen. Still, we have to give it credit: the episode does leave open some interesting possibilities for the next few episodes, and there were some nice flashback moments, and the revivals of Homura, Mose, and Hyogi were either childish or extremely clever; only time will tell.
The crew has to go explore America, and there's no doubt that something new is bound to emerge, but the gradual process through which it's all introduced leaves a lot to be desired in an exciting moment. And it's like being offered a pre-dinner cocktail and being told dinner will be ready in an hour – you can't help but feel a little impatient.
F-finally! We did it! We have arrived in America
Dr. Stone season 4, Episode 2was quite an unexpected experience. On the one hand, it gave some of the characters some much-needed rest and respite before many of the adventures began. On the other hand, it failed to build on that foundation, which is the essence that defines the series. Many fans were anticipating the crew's trip to America, so this episode was more of a teaser than an episode.

Based on Riichiro Inagaki's shonen manga, Dr. Stone anime is set thousands of years after a cataclysm turned humanity to stone. Awakened in a Stone Age world, Senku seeks to accelerate the growth of humanity through the power of science.
