Super Saiyan Blue was poorly designed

Key conclusions

  • The form did not offer anything new in terms of functionality, lacking the unique features found in other forms that came later, such as the Ultra Instinct.
  • Despitecriticism, were criticisms, Blue serves as a necessary power-up in the franchise´s increased power dynamic to allow Goku and Vegeta to reach the next step.

Transformations are one of the most recognizable and iconic aspects Dragon Ball Z franchise. The very act of characters angrily yelling to unlock a state is much stronger than any before, is what made this series famous and is now a staple of most shonen anime series. As such, more and more transformations make their way into the series, with some becoming staples that are used a lot more than others.

For Dragon Ball Superis the Super Saiyan Blue form. Although the series started with a brand new form of the Super Saiyan God in the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods movie, it has since changed to make Blue a major makeover. However, the latter has been met with a fair amount of criticism stating that it's a poorly designed form that doesn't really offer anything new other than a color change, so let's see if that's really the case.

Dragon Ball Super Saiyan forms are the most iconic in all of anime, but here's why ditching them is good for the franchise!

Why Super Saiyan Blue is a poorly designed form

Why it leaves something to be desired

History of Ark

Golden Frieze Arch

Super Saiyan Blue debuted in the Resurrection of F a film that was only the second property under the banner Dragon Ball Super part of the franchise. This showed the very first problem fans encountered with the form, as Super Saiyan God was first revealed just a couple of years ago and was considered a staple of the series going forward. However, it was quickly replaced and essentially forgotten when Blue was introduced.

Aside from serving as a form replacement that was quite well received by fans, Super Saiyan Blue also offered nothing new in terms of functionality. For all intents and purposes, Blue is nothing more than a repaint of the original Super Saiyan as he acts exactly the same in terms of his powers and abilities. While this could technically be said of all subsequent Super Saiyan forms, Super Saiyan God at least had the unique idea of the user's body becoming thinner as their entire aura changed.

Moreover, the whole God Ki aspect was incredibly interesting, which was unfortunately expanded much later with the Divine Techniques. For the most part, God Ki just acted as a vehicle for Goku and Vegeta to become much stronger than they could achieve with their Saiyan genetics, which is evident from how Super Saiyan Blue worked. On the other hand, it played a much more interesting role with Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, as it gave Saiyans the ability to use the techniques of Angels and Gods of Destruction respectively.

The concept of God Ki's unique gifts was amazing, but was included too late. For Blue, however, there wasn't much to distinguish it from previous forms other than the color blue. Moreover, the Blue Kaioken and Blue Evolved forms were good, but didn't add much difference other than changing the color palette. All things considered, Super Saiyan Blue was simple Super the Super Saiyan version, meaning it was just a placeholder transformation to gauge the strength of enemies.

Why Super Saiyan Blue is a good form

Why it works for what it is

On the other hand, some fans feel that Super Saiyan Blue, while not very good, works as it is. This is because Dragon Ball Super greatly increased the franchise's power dynamic, so to compensate for this increase, Goku and Vegeta found God Ki by basically resetting how their power is measured. As things stand now, Super Saiyan God is essentially the base power for these characters, and Blue is the “new” Super Saiyan for the series.

Of course, if the uniform had a unique design in terms of visual and functional capabilities, it would be even better. However, it just serves as a stronger stepping stone for the Super Saiyan God form, and for the most part, it serves that role well. As the basic Super Saiyan transformation served as a measure of strength for the opponents the heroes fought ZSuper Saiyan Blue fulfills this role Super.

It's a power even greater than a Super Saiyan God!

It also makes the Divine Techniques that Goku and Vegeta have achieved even better as it makes them much stronger than even their Blue forms. In addition to this, they also perfectly realize God Ki's true potential, finally giving them the forms used by Angels and Gods of Destruction.
