Super Mario Speedrunner plays the piano while kicking

Summary

  • The streamer was playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii head and feet in Awesome Games Done Quick.

  • In addition, they also used their hands to play along to the game's soundtrack on the keyboard.

  • Just to make it even more difficult, they then demonstrated that they could do it all while blindfolded.

Awesome Games Done Quick returns in 2025 to remind you that no matter how good you think you are at your favorite games, there's always someone better at them than you. In some cases, there are people who are so good that they have to invent new ways to play with them to make them feel difficult, like this guy playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii with head and legs to keep his hands free. play the game's soundtrack.

The speedrunner's name is Wes, short for FunkopotamusWes, which he goes by on Twitch. Starting in the summer of 2023, Wes has been doing what he calls piano runs (thanks, Vice). For running, the streamer has to use other parts of the body to play the games, as he needs his hands free to play the background music. Mario Kart seems to be a fan of his, but on Wednesday he showed off his skills using New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii during this year's AGDQ.

Don't miss these amazing speed runs at this year's AGDQ

Live music, trick controllers, and classic Metroid Prime racing will make for a great AGDQ.

Wes explains exactly how his setup works to get things started. A Joy-Con mounted on his head moves Mario left and right when Wes tilts his head left or right, while tilting his head forward makes Mario jump, tilting it back makes him crouch. A Joy-Con is strapped to his leg so he can make Mario run by pressing the trigger with his toe, and he can also make Mario jump by pressing the foot pad. Handy when he needs to run and jump as he will use the head controller to move.

Super Mario Bros. Wii Hands-Free

While playing the OST on the keyboard

As if all of that wasn't impressive enough, there's a moment during Wes' performance at AGDQ where he adds a blindfold to the mix. So from that point on, he controls Mario with his head and feet, playing the soundtracks for each level on the keyboard, and he can't see anything while he's doing it. It's not just complete chaos on the screen with all of that in place. He plays the game, and plays it well.

The inventive ways people come up with to add new challenges to their favorite games never ceases to amaze me. Wes speedrunning Mario to his theme tune and doing it blindfolded might be the most inventive and impressive example I've seen since streamer MissMikkaa beat two copies of Elden Ring at the same time, one with a controller and one with dance mat.
