In case you missed it, The Thing is getting a remaster.
-
The cult survival horror game from the early 2000s is set for 2024, and on Thursday it got its first gameplay trailer.
-
If the game does come out, it will realize the original vision of the developers along with some other improvements, including better graphics.
One of the nicest surprises of 2024 was the news that The Thing would be remastered for modern consoles. The 2002 survival horror game, based on the movie of the same name, was an absolute cult classic at the time of its release. Not only was it a good video game, but the game was actually a sequel to the movie, making it more than just a licensed IP-cassette like Enter The Matrix.
The remastering was originally revealed a few months ago, and the game will launch on all platforms including PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox. This is being done by Nightdive Studios, which has a lot of experience bringing classics into the modern world, and the team is committed to realizing the developers' “original vision”.
Ahead of the 2024 window, a new gameplay trailer has premiered, giving fans a first-hand look at just how much the game has been updated. On the one hand, the graphics look nominally better, but still retain the style of the 2000s. And the gameplay looks the same as it did then, with some additional improvements built in.
Unfortunately, the trailer didn't elaborate on the game's supposed 2024 launch window. With just a few months to go, it seems like it's now or never when it comes to the game's release.

This century's most recognizable horror icons aren't from the movies
Gaming and the Internet have had a profound effect on horror movies in the 21st century, giving us countless icons to rival movie classics.
The classic is back
The Thing isn't the only cult classic game to get a remaster. Earlier this year, Tomba! was reissued through Tomba! A Special Edition pack that helps bring the legendary platformer into the modern age. Additionally, Thursday also revealed that the Croc will be redesigned. Indeed, Croc Legend of the Gobbos improves for modern hardware.
Elsewhere, it was also announced that Tomb Raider will be getting another collection of classic games. This time around, the beloved (and maligned) Angel of Darkness will be making its way to this generation alongside The Last Revelation and The Chronicles. In other words, if you're a fan of classic games, especially those with cult followings, then 2024 is definitely your year.
