Sony's president says the PS5 Pro's $700 price tag hasn't hurt sales
The PS5 Pro isn't for everyone, and that's okay.
Just two days into the new month, one analyst shared his findings, noting that the PS5 significantly outperformed its competitors in November, while the Nintendo Switch, eight years into its life cycle, surpassed Xbox's console offerings.
The PS5 sold three times as many consoles as the Nintendo Switch, which in turn outsold the Xbox
On the Install Base forums, analyst Welfare shared his findings, focusing specifically on Amazon's November sales.
They estimate that the PS5, buoyed by the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, sold around 153,000 units last month, up about 25 percent from its November 2023 estimate of 122,000 units. Welfare estimates that Sony has sold somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 PS5 Pro consoles on Amazon, with around 90,000 PS5 Slims making up the bulk of sales.
As news of the Switch 2 seemed imminent, sales of Nintendo's eight-year-old console dropped significantly from 143,000 in November 2023 to 56,000 this year. But despite the sharp drop, the Nintendo Switch still managed to outsell the Xbox, which Welfare estimates sold around 32,000 units in November 2024.
Despite the sharp drop, the Nintendo Switch still managed to outsell the Xbox.
This is likely to be troubling but not at all surprising news for Microsoft, as Xbox has struggled with competition over the past few years. Despite the incredibly successful launch of Call of Duty this year, helped by Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, the company has faced hundreds of layoffs in its gaming departments over the past two years. Microsoft, however, defiantly confirmed that it will not be leaving the console game anytime soon.
Nintendo, on the other hand, will probably be thrilled with the sales. Given that 2024 was a very quiet year with no major tent pole releases, it's a boon to continue to sell that many units. Whether this console will surpass Sony's revised PS2 sales of 160 million and become the best-selling console of all time, however, remains to be seen..
Sony, whose recent console sales outpace the PS4, was Black Friday's biggest winner, selling nearly three times as many consoles as its nearest competitor. Like Nintendo, the console released limited editions from first parties this year, making its annual growth doubly impressive. The company also appears to be making major moves with plans to acquire Elden Ring's parent company, Kadokawa, and is rumored to be making a new handheld console for the first time since 2011's PlayStation Vita.
