Key conclusions
- Project Polaris, codenamed The Witcher 4, has entered “full-scale production.”
- It has more developers working on it than all other CDPR projects combined.
- It's part of what's being described as “the upcoming saga of The Witcher.”
The Witcher 4, known under the code name Project Polaris, has entered the next stage of its development. According to its director Sebastian Kalemba, Polaris is now in full-scale production.
In this announcement, Calemba refers to The Witcher 4 as part of the “future Witcher saga,” further separating it from the first three games. With that in mind, it's becoming increasingly likely that we'll be playing as a new protagonist, perhaps seeing Ciri take the lead.
The Witcher 4 has reached a new milestone in development
Full-scale production of the Polaris project begins now
As Kalemba explains, this means that the developers still have new challenges “just around the corner”, so we shouldn't expect to see much of the project any time soon. Still, things seem to be going well, as the progress is in line with CD Projekt Red's predictions at the start of the year.
Along with this revelation, CDPR also shared information on how many developers are working on each of the titles. Here we see that Polaris has the largest team to date, with Project Orion – the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 – coming in second.
Meanwhile, we live off scraps of information. Most recently, the actor was spotted including The Witcher 4 on his resume, suggesting that filming has either started or is about to begin. At least it shows that casting has begun, which could give us some more details about the game if more actors are revealed to be in it.
The leading man himself, Doug Cockle, has hinted that he will reprise his role as Geralt. However, even if he does, his wording suggests that he won't be the main character this time around, as he says that Geralt will be a “part” of the game and it “won't focus” on him.
The Witcher 4 is an upcoming RPG from Polish developer CD Projekt Red, codenamed Polaris. Other than that it's in development, not much is known about the plot, though CDPR has said it will begin a new, multiplayer saga.
