How Mi’pu’mi has tailored Howl for mobile phones

After playing Howl on a smartphone, it’s difficult to think that the game was ever accessible on any other platform. The game seems tailor-made for touchscreens. Since it launched a few months ago on both PC and console, this new and inventive strategic puzzler from Mi’pu’mi and Astragon Entertainment has gained a lot of attention.

The game puts you in the role of a deaf heroine who has to aid those affected by the “howling plague,” and the development team refers to it as a “tactical folktale.” Throughout the 60 stages of the game, you have to dodge or defeat these wolves who have been converted from the disease’s victims.

Mi’pu’mi promises to deliver a mobile-first experience of Howl

As previously said, the game’s slower tempo makes it ideal for play sessions on your phone and offers an enticing combination of turn-based strategy and puzzles. The controls are also well-suited for touchscreens. The Mi’pu’mi development team has also done a masterful job of porting the game to mobile devices, albeit it wasn’t entirely trouble-free.

According to the dev team, “Since the game started on PC & Switch, the biggest challenge was getting the controls right for mobile. And of course, the UI/UX elements need to work properly on the smaller screen. When these important matters are solved, the team can focus on performance, but that is also a task we are facing regularly on consoles. It is always a bit underestimated how much optimization work is done and needed in creating a game.”

The team has also further assured those who are concerned that the mobile version will not be a subpar rendition of the console and PC versions, noting that they “always do our best to deliver a similar experience on all platforms.”

Mi’pu’mi aims to continue bringing AAA-quality games to mobile

Mi’pu’mi is among the select few studios still providing high-end, expensive console-style mobile experiences; yet, the game is originally free to download, with the majority of its content unlocked through in-app purchases.

When asked about whether it was a deliberate objective to offer such a high-quality experience for all gamers regardless of format the devs said, “We are a truly multiplatform studio and licensed developer on all current platforms. We always try to bring our stories to as many players as possible on all platforms currently available. Mobile gaming is a huge and important market and we are quite happy that Astragon Entertainment supported us in delivering Howl on mobile.”

Even though the mobile industry is continually evolving in a lot of ways, Mi’pu’mi thinks that there will always be a need for these kinds of experiences. “The different platforms are intertwining every year a bit further and the expectations of players for mobile regarding visual quality and immersive gameplay are growing steadily. Making sure players get the same experience on mobile as on PC or console is a challenge, an attractive one though. And has mobile ever been easy?

Mi’pu’mi is using Howl

Mi’pu’mi is utilizing Howl on mobile devices to assist in determining what works best for the format going ahead. According to them, “The game has just been released on mobile and the team had an incredible journey starting with the feature during the Nintendo Indie World Showcase in November 2023. So we are looking back at an incredibly fulfilling as well as satisfying time, delivering a great experience to many players on all major platforms (including mobile).”

Mi’pu’mi further added, “We are collecting the feedback and the player’s input from all releases and will discuss how we proceed from here. As a studio and the creative people we are, we want to use the medium games to express ourselves and tell stories our audience would like to experience as well.

So to see for yourself how Howl feels like the perfect fit for mobile you can check it out right now via the App Store and the Google Play Store. As mentioned the taster section is free to download too, so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.
