12 Best PS4-Exclusive Games Of All Time

PlayStation games are the ultimate narrative-driven experiences. As the PlayStation 5 gets its fair share of exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy 16, and Horizon Forbidden West, it’s time to look back at the games of the older generation PlayStation console and see what gems its library was home to.

These games began that elevated cinematic, character-driven story quality, which has only evolved on the PS5 through sequels and new IPs. While some titles have since been released on PC, they’ll never be found on Xbox or Switch, so they can still be considered some of the best PS4 exclusives of all time.

Ready at Dawn

Genre(s)
Third-Person Shooter

When this game launched, it was met with great ridicule for its price not being worth the length of the gameplay. The Order: 1886 is indeed a very short game filled with more cutscenes than gameplay, but it also features one of the best graphics on the console, especially for how early of an exclusive it was on the PS4.

The game is set in London during the Victorian Age and tells a sci-fi and supernatural story of agents from the Knights of the Order, based on the King Arthur mythology, who go after Lycans that are terrorizing the citizens, only to be wrapped up in a more sinister conspiracy. There’s some very underrated voice acting and weapon design as well.

11 Until Dawn

Until Dawn brought Telltale and horror together on PlayStation 4. It offers one of the most immersive horror stories in gaming from developer Supermassive that makes you feel as though you’re playing through an interactive film, and it features a star-studded Hollywood cast with names like Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Peter Stormare.

This game follows a group of teens heading to a lodge in the snowy Blackwood Mountain, a region that’s also host to an abandoned mine and an eerie Sanatorium. They’re soon met with a killer stalking them and something more supernatural tied to the land, with your choices determining their survival.

10 Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human comes from Quantic Dream, the developer behind Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, with this game fitting right in with the precise mechanics and design of its predecessors. It tells an emotional near-future story of an android society vilified by humans and forced into an uprising.

You play multiple characters, from an investigation android named Connor to a caretaker droid-turned-revolutionary leader Markus, and a housekeeper-turned-guardian Kara, and the writing is unmatched. How each of their stories intertwines in the gameplay and the choices you make form one of gaming’s most powerful experiences.

9 Ghost Of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is a PS4 exclusive from Sucker Punch, a studio previously well-known for the Infamous series and Sly Cooper games. This was very different but brought excellent visuals, storytelling, and combat that also curbed a lot of desires many had for an Assassin’s Creed game with a samurai protagonist.

Here, you follow the story of Jin Sakai, a lone wolf fighting to reclaim his homeland from Mongol invaders led by the fictional relative of Kublai Khan, Khotun Khan. You traverse the scenic Tsushima on horseback, following the guiding wind to your objectives, and can use stealth or melee to attack opponents. Ghost of Tsushima also offers an immersive black-and-white Kurosawa mode, inspired by director Akira Kurosawa’s craft.

8 Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Released
February 28, 2017

Horizon Zero Dawn brought one of the most original gameplay and narratives to the PlayStation console. Developed by Guerilla Games, the makers of the Killzone series, this game envisions a primitive society in the future devastated by a plague not caused by zombies or mutants but rather by infected machines.

Your main character is Aloy, a member of the Nora tribe who goes up against the hostile machines roaming the landscape while uncovering a greater mystery at play. The game has a more RPG-heavy style not previously seen for PS4 exclusives, with its lore, bestiary, and machine combat design particularly impressive.

7 Death Stranding

While you may not be a big fan of its gameplay loop or are left confused by Death Stranding, this game undoubtedly achieves amazing game design and is a technical marvel on the console. It is also the first independent outing from creative auteur Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series and Silent Hills PT.

This game offers quite the performances from its cast as well, which features Norman Reedus, Margaret Qualley, Lea Seydoux, and even the likeness of acclaimed writer and director Guillermo del Toro. Most of the time, you’ll be traversing the terrain and battling its realistic physics and conditions, BTs, and other larger entities to deliver packages safely, and then there’s a social strand system where other players construct roads and bridges to help each other out.

6 Bloodborne

Bloodborne: The Hunter And Eileen The Crow Taking On The Cleric Beast

Bloodborne

Released
March 24, 2015

Developer(s)
From Software

Bloodborne is probably one of the most cloned FromSoftware Soulslikes out there, with just the newest example being the equally acclaimed Lies of P. Unlike Sekiro, Elden Ring, and the Dark Souls games, this was solely a PS4 exclusive that quickly became one of the most revered entries by FromSoft fans.

It’s a refreshing deviation from standard PlayStation Studios storytelling fare, with less straightforward linear beats and cutscenes for environmental storytelling and hidden lore. The boss designs were some of the studio’s most astonishing, and the more Gothic Horror Lovecraft inspirations helped establish one of the eeriest atmospheres in a Soulslike game.

5 The Last Of Us Part 2

The Last of Us Part 2’s story was divisive, but like Death Stranding, you cannot deny the amount of detail that went into this game. From the weapon animation, gore system, sound design, and facial animation, this sequel offers some of the most realistic graphics that put on full display the capabilities of the PS4’s old-gen software.

If you were looking forward to following the rag-tag duo of Ellie and Joel in their latest adventure traversing the post-apocalyptic world, you may be disappointed. The story instead focuses on a more mature Ellie seeking revenge against Abby after a heinous murder, with you also getting to play from Abby’s perspective.

4 Marvel’s Spider-Man

Insomniac and Marvel thought maybe it was time for a new Spider-Man game in 2018, and boy, were they right. Marvel’s Spider-Man delivers an emotional cinematic narrative of Peter Parker and Miles Morales while introducing an array of iconic villains like Kingpin, Rhino, Doc Ock, Vulture, Mister Negative, and Scorpion, to name a few.

The web-slinging is smooth and fun, with the combat mimicking the satisfying style of the Batman Arkham games. There are plenty of side activities to complete around New York, in addition to the main missions that have you assume multiple characters sometimes, and each is written exceptionally well.

3 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the definitive finale to the Nathan Drake saga of the Uncharted series and the best and most personal story out of all four games. A Thief’s End sees Nate and Sully back in action, but this time joined by another Drake, Nathan’s older brother Sam, in a quest to find Henry Avery’s treasure.

The settings are gorgeously scenic, taking you to Italy, Scotland, and Madagascar, where you’ll explore the mythical lands of Libertalia in your search. You have a brilliant chase sequence with an armored vehicle that becomes one of the most thrilling and memorable parts of the game, along with the new rope grapple mechanic adding a whole new element to the action-adventure gameplay.

2 The Last Of Us Remastered

The Last of Us: Remastered

Released
July 29, 2014

Publisher(s)
Sony Computer Entertainment

Not only is The Last of Us Remastered one of the best PS4 exclusives of all time, but the game will probably go down as one of the best of all time in gaming history. The survival journey of Joel and Ellie, a rugged older man with a tragic past and an immune girl holding a potential cure for the Cordyceps fungus, produces a pairing like no other.

Similar to the studio’s Uncharted games, Naughty Dog sets you up with some intense set pieces and action sequences while also incorporating more stealth into the gameplay with the Clicker infected that attack based on sound. This really plays into the more disturbing horror elements found in the game.

1 God Of War

God of War Kratos visits Mimir trapped in a tree

2018 brought PlayStation fans not only Marvel’s Spider-Man as a PS4 exclusive but the next installment in the God of War series as well, simply titled God of War. It was both a sequel and a complete reimagining of the series in setting and design, shifting to the more signature cinematic and immersive house storytelling style and putting Kratos in the Norse realms.

Joining Kratos along for the brutal hack-and-slash stroll to Jotunheim is his young son Atreus, who’s good with a bow and a help in combat. The two must go to the realm of giants to scatter Kratos’ wife Ashes, and you meet many new delightful characters like Brock, Sindri, and Mimir along the way while constantly getting foiled by enemies like Baldur, Thor’s sons, and giant trolls.
