Your character’s Origin is their most defining characteristic in Rogue Trader. Choose wisely!

Of course, using the power of the warp has its consequences. Relying too heavily on a Psyker’s abilities will increase Veil Degradation, which can lead to psychic phenomena and even Perils of the Warp, if you aren’t careful. Below, we’ll take a look at everything you need to know about these effects.

What Is Veil Degradation?

veil degradation tooltip explanation

Veil Degradation occurs as a Psyker uses psychic abilities. It begins at zero, and can increase or decrease depending on what actions you take.

  • Using a minor psychic power increases Veil Degradation by 1.
  • Using a major psychic power increases Veil Degradation by 3.
  • Veil Degradation decreases by 1 at the end of each round.

Veil Degradation will change when any Psyker uses abilities, even enemy ones!

While Veil Degradation is 14 or less, the following effects are in place.

  • Minor psychic powers have a [5 + psy rating]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.
  • Major psychic powers have a [20 + 4 x psy rating]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.
  • Sanctioned Psykers using minor psychic powers have a [[5 + psy rating]/2]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.
  • Sanctioned Psykers using major psychic powers have a [10 + 2 x psy rating]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.

There is always a slight chance for psychic phenomena to occur when using psychic abilities, with Sanctioned Psykers triggering these effects less frequently.

When Veil Degradation reaches 15, the following effects are in place.

  • The chance to trigger all psychic phenomena is quadrupled.
  • Using major psychic powers has a chance to trigger Perils of the Warp.
  • Unsanctioned Pyskers using minor psychic powers have a [20 + 4 x psy rating]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.
  • Unsanctioned Psykers using major psychic powers have a [20 + psy rating + veil degradation]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena whenever Perils of the Warp do not occur.
  • Sanctioned Psykers using minor psychic powers have a [10 + 2 x psy rating]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena.
  • Sanctioned Psykers using major psychic powers have a [10 + psy rating + veil degradation]% chance to trigger psychic phenomena whenever Perils of the Warp do not occur.

The highest Veil Degradation can reach is 20, at which point the chance to trigger psychic phenomena and Perils of the Warp is greatest.

What Are Psychic Phenomena And Perils Of The Warp?

psychic phenomena ghosts appearing around the battlefield

Psychic phenomena have a chance to occur any time a Psyker uses a psychic ability. When these occur, they will reduce the momentum of your party, making it more difficult to trigger Heroic Actions, while inching you closer to Desperate Measures.

Psychic phenomena can come in many different forms, but their overall effect is always the same. They can be avoided by not using psychic abilities when Veil Degradation is high, or through certain Talents like Stabilising Factor.

Perils of the Warp

Perils of the Warp have a chance to occur when major psychic powers are used at a Veil Degradation level of 15 or higher. Unlike psychic phenomena, which are mildly inconvenient but still manageable, Perils of the Warp can drastically alter the outcome of the battle.

There are several different effects that can occur when a Peril of the Warp is triggered, ranging from pushing away characters, damaging them, or even summoning daemons to the field. You’ll need to be extra careful when casting major psychic powers, especially when Void Degradation is high.
