- The Countdown ability in Like A Dragon Gaiden provides a spinning counterattack to break out from enemy onslaughts and create space in combat.
Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name grants “Joryu” (definitely not Kiryu) access to abilities that are perhaps more powerful than any previous entry in the series. With over 100 ability levels to upgrade, you’ll have some tough choices when deciding on the optimal upgrade path in Like A Dragon Gaiden.
From powerhouse Heat Actions and new gadgets to classic moves like The Tiger Drop, there are a number of powerful abilities for Joryu to learn. If you want to make the most out of every Akame Point and Yen spent, then these are the best abilities to upgrade in Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.
10 The Countdown
Performs a spinning counterattack as Joryu returns to his feet.
The Countdown ability requires you to be knocked down, but you’ll likely find yourself on your back more often than you think during the harder combat sections. While it’s not the most overpowered ability in Like A Dragon Gaiden, The Countdown provides an excellent maneuver to break out from enemy onslaughts.
When executed, the spinning kick will knock nearby enemies back (or down) while you return to your feet, giving you much-needed space to re-enter combat. Things can go south in a hurry if you let multiple enemies gang up on you in combat, so maintaining careful spacing will be an important combat tip to remember.
9 Flexing Resolute Counter
Joryu performs a headbutt in retaliation to the enemy hit.
If tactical dodging and blocking is a bit too much effort, and you just want to button mash, then Flexing Resolute Counter might be the best ability in Like A Dragon Gaiden for you. Assuming you alternate mashing and holding your attack buttons, you’ll find yourself performing this counter regularly.
Even with careful combat strategies, there are few simpler ways to execute a counter than by simply holding down one button while your foes unload punches on you. The headbutt will briefly stun most enemies, knocking them a foot back, allowing you time to turn the tables while they’re staggered.
8 Twisting Ultimate Counter
Performs a two-step counterattack when you dodge an enemy’s Ultimate Attack. The second step will throw the enemy in your chosen direction.
Counterattacks are a key part of improving your combat skills in Like A Dragon Gaiden, with the Twisting Ultimate Counter offering a means to turn your foe’s most powerful moves against them. When you see an enemy begin to glow red, prepare to counter them by executing a dodge just before their attack lands.
When activated correctly, you can counter the enemy’s Ultimate Attack with two button presses; the first is a direct parry of their attack, with the second motion allowing you to throw the enemy. Each step inflicts damage that scales according to your Attack.
7 Agent Gadget: Spider
Increases the number of wires that shoot out at enemies with each level of upgrade.
The Agent Gadget: Spider merges the Like A Dragon world, with that of Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Spider-Man in general using this device. The Spider Gadget allows Joryu to sling webs that bind and throw affected enemies with ease.
If you want to control crowds by tossing them around, then upgrade this gear to the maximum level as soon as you can. At maximum rank, you’ll be able to grab multiple enemies, incapacitating them and causing massive damage by hurling them into the nearest wall.
6 Rolling Escape
Perform an evasive rolling dodge that allows Joryu to cover a large amount of space and escape enemies.
While it’s great to deflect enemy attacks or be the aggressor against a large crowd, sometimes you’ll find yourself in a desperate situation you simply want out of. When that time eventually arrives, the Rolling Escape will be there to save you.
This evasive maneuver is only available when Joryu is in Yakuza mode. You cannot use the rolling dodge when in Agent Mode, as you have access to other forms of dodging.
Aside from serving as a great survival tool, you’ll also be able to close space quickly when fighting agile enemies who constantly create distance. Whether you choose to use it offensively or defensively, this ability provides immense versatility to fit any situation.
5 Daidoji Evasive Strike
Joryu performs a quick-strike attack immediately after dodging.
Speaking of using your dodges aggressively, the Daidoji Evasive Strike is easily one of the most important tools in your arsenal. The Evasive Strike allows you to get a quick jab of damage into your foe, which can be essential to finishing fights.
The damage isn’t massive, but the ability to land a quick shot without much fear of being hit is extremely valuable. Don’t get greedy and attempt to combo your hits if the opponent is strong, as this can easily backfire if they connect a combo of their own.
4 Heat Action: Daidoji Martial Mastery
Joryu executes a Heat Action that combines every agent gadget to cause immense damage against a group of enemies.
While you won’t be able to get this Heat Action until much later in your playthrough (or after significant Coliseum grinding), it definitely delivers in both the visual and practical effects.
This ability can only be unlocked once you finish Mizorogi’s substory by upgrading every gadget to level five.
After you do, talk to Mizorogi, and he will unlock access to this Heat Action.
If we’re solely judging the quality of the action animation, then Daidoji Martial Mastery is the best ability in Like A Dragon Gaiden without a doubt. The short scene where Joryu mystifies, incapacitates, and wipes the floor with a group of enemies is wonderfully done, and equally powerful.
3 Increase Equippable Gear
Increases your maximum equippable gear by one slot with each upgrade.
While it’s certainly not flashy, sometimes the best abilities are the ones that simply get the job done. Combat is important, but if you want to prepare Joryu with the best gear in Like A Dragon Gaiden, then you need to unlock all four slots to maximize what he can equip.
They’re not too expensive considering their importance, so you’ll want to unlock all four slots quickly, especially if you plan to use the Eye of the Dragon in one of the slots.
The Eye of the Dragon increases the amount of Akame Points earned, and is a smart early purchase to maximize its value.
2 Boost Attack Kiwami
Raises Joryu’s Attack stat. The Attack stat governs all damage you inflict in either Agent or Yakuza mode.
The combat sections are absolutely a challenge, but while it may be tempting to increase your Heat or Health, the best way to make Like A Dragon Gaiden easier is by raising your attack. The faster you are able to upgrade to the Kiwami level, the more significant the damage difference will feel.
While going full glass cannon may seem risky, it’s actually incredibly easy to wipe the floor with most fights once you boost up your stats appropriately. The only warning against doing this is that the game may seem too easy if you level up your Attack stat fast.
1 Tiger Drop
Joryu performs the best possible counter, causing massive amounts of damage depending on how many timed presses you land successfully.
The Tiger Drop has a legendary reputation worthy of naming it the best ability in Like A Dragon Gaiden due to its sheer damage. The timing for activating the ability is very tight, but successfully triggering it spells almost certain doom for your foes.
The only downside to Tiger Drop is the somewhat prohibitive cost, but you can easily make enough money to buy it by playing some Coliseum battles. Once you’re able to afford the 3,000,000 Yen cost, enjoy the incredibly satisfying animation and unprecedented damage.
