Super Mario RPG is full of hidden secrets for the player to uncover if they venture off the beaten path, including secret boss fights, ultimate weapons for each party member, and some interesting hidden locations.
One of the most helpful hidden locations in the game is a treasure room that can be found in Belome Temple, a late-game area that you’ll need to make your way through as part of the main story. The treasure room within the temple isn’t part of the main quest, however, and is going to take some extra work to get access to.
How To Find The Belome Temple Treasure Room
The first leg of the journey is actually getting to Belome Temple. You’ll reach this part of the game after getting to Land’s End. Once you’ve followed the warrior ant enemies down the whirlwinds they make in the sand, you’ll find yourself underground. Keep moving through this area and you’ll reach Belome Temple. Getting here is part of the main story, so don’t worry about it being missed.
Once here, you want to keep moving through the temple until you reach the room pictured above, which has a single gold dog statue you can jump up to in order to get your fortune read, which then influences where the next room takes you. The fortune that the dog spits out is random every time, so if you don’t get the one you want, then leave the room and jump up to the dog’s tongue to get another one spat at you.
You’re looking for the one that reads, “Sorry, I’m now accepting visitors past my bedtime”. If you get this one, immediately take the platform ahead of you down and go into the next room. You’ll find yourself in the treasure room, which will be guarded by a big golden dog. The only way you’re getting through here is to find the treasure key, so let’s get that sorted now.
How To Find The Belome Temple Treasure Room Key
Luckily, the Belome Temple treasure room key can actually be found just a little bit after you’ve cleared the area for the first time. Once you’ve beaten Belome, the next room you enter will contain a warp pipe to Monstro Town, which is where we’ll find the treasure key (as well as a scavenger hunt quest set by the Three Musty Fears).
As you enter Monstro Town for the first time, you’ll instinctively want to head towards the first doors you see. As you do, you’ll likely spot that a golden key can be found sitting above the second building. This is the Belome Temple treasure room key, so we’ve just got to figure out how to knock it down now.
Go into the second house you see in Monstro Town and you’ll find a Chow and a Thwomp just chilling out at a table. Go over to the Thwomp and talk to them and they’ll raise themselves in the air before smashing the ground. Do this up to eight times and the key that was sitting above the house will fall to the ground. Rush out as Mario and grab it, and then you can make your way back to the Belome Temple treasure room, which should be easy since you can now just go back the way you came.
The Belome Temple treasure room key can disappear if left for too long, but it’ll just respawn above the house, so if that happens you just need to repeat the step above.
What’s In The Belome Temple Treasure Room?
Once you’ve got the key, make sure you repeat the first steps we outlined and get the fortune about not accepting visitors past a certain bedtime. Then, go to the treasure room itself using the platform, and you’ll be asked to hand over the key to the golden dog guarding the room.
Once inside, you’ll find several Frog Coins, a Max Mushroom, a Fire bomb, four Flower Tabs, and a Royal Syrup. Lots of helpful rewards for what amounts to five minutes of extra exploring!
