The first Pokemon TCG release of each year is usually a special one, designed as much for collectors as it is players. This year, it is Crown Zenith to say goodbye to the Galar Region. Next year, though, we’re celebrating Paldea with over 100 new shiny Pokemon in Paldean Fates.
Like Hidden Fates and Shining Fates before it, Paldean Fates’ focus is on shiny Pokemon, and is sure to be a hit with collectors. Of course, there’s also a new Charizard, with Shiny Tera Charizard almost certainly being the big chase pull of the expansion.
Launching January 26, 2024, Paldean Fates will include over 240 cards, with over 100 of those being shiny Pokemon. It’s likely it’ll follow the same structure as the other Fates expansions, with the majority being regular, basic Pokemon, but with the differing colour schemes that make shiny Pokemon so collectible.
Any set with a Charizard in has a habit of being incredibly popular, with the not-Dragon-type dragon being their most valuable card. Expect for the same to happen with Paldean Fates, with the promise of it being a Tera-type ex only making it even more of a desirable card.
However, there’s also the promise of new ex Pokemon, which have been the hallmark of the Scarlet & Violet era. So far, The Pokemon Company has confirmed we’ll be getting Iron Treads and Great Tusk Future and Ancient ex cards, continuing the time travel theme introduced in the era and made its way to the TCG in Paradox Rift.
We’ll also be getting ‘Shiny Tera ex’ Pokemon for the first time, as mentioned with Charizard. Aside from being a mouthful to say, these will include Pokemon like Forretress and Espathra. Others include Tinkaton, Ceruledge, Dondozo, Pikachu, Greavard, Maschiff, Fidough, Meowscara, Quaquaval, Skeledirg,Smoliv, Maushold, TInkatink, Flamigo, Finizen and Mimikyu, but exactly what forms they’ll be available in are yet to be confirmed.
Aside from the Pokemon themselves, Paldean Fates is said to include a “handful” of full-art Supporter cards, and at least six hyper rare cards. My money’s on Charizard being one of them, but we won’t know for sure until closer to the expansion’s release.
One thing that hasn’t been announced is whether or not Paldean Fates will include Radiant Pokemon, which haven’t been seen in the Scarlet & Violet era so far. Radiant Pokemon are shiny Pokemon with unique abilities and deckbuilding restrictions, and have been a mainstay in special collector’s sets for a while now. Could this be the expansion we see them break into the current era?
Paldean Fates is currently the only expansion confirmed to launch in 2024. However, with the end of the year rapidly creeping up on us and Paradox Rift now out in the wild, it’s only a matter of time before we catch wind of what else the Scarlet & Violet era has in store for us.
