- Side quests in Death’s Door include finding 24 Shiny Things that can be used to decorate the crow’s desk.
- Some Shiny Things are easily found, while others are hidden behind secrets or only accessible after beating the final boss.
- Collecting all the Shiny Things is necessary for completing the game, and this guide provides helpful tips for finding them all.
Side quests are often a way for developers to pad out their games and make the worlds feel more lived in, and Death’s Door is no exception. While offering very few in-game benefits, a total of 24 Shiny Things are scattered throughout the world for the little crow to find and decorate their desk with.
Some are easily attainable, some are hidden behind the game’s many secrets, and some are only available after beating the final boss. If getting to 100 percent is the end goal, collecting all the Shiny Things is necessary — luckily, this guide’s here to help you with that.
Bear in mind that this article will go in the order of display, not necessarily the order in which they can be found.
Updated November 13, 2023 by Rosa Baumgartl: Death’s Door is a beautiful game filled with little secrets and funny encounters. The overarching malevolent storyline is just the icing on the cake. And while finishing the main quest is a lot of fun, finding every unique item and discovering all the hidden locations is what really makes a game like this replayable. We’ve added some more tips to make it even easier to finish Death’s Door entirely.
24 Old Engagement Ring – Ceramic Manor
Location |
Ceramic Manor Ballroom |
Related NPC |
Urn Witch |
Requirements |
Defeat Pot Enemy |
The Old Engagement is located in the rafters of the Ceramic Manor’s ballroom. A spinning pot enemy will take to the floor and can be a quick end to the Reaper. Stay on the move to avoid its attacks, and only hit with melee when it briefly stops spinning.
Once defeated, you can exit the room. Alternatively, take the ladder up and cross all the way to the other side of the wooden beams (careful not to fall) — The Old Engagement Ring will be sitting on a small shelving unit. It seems to have belonged to the Urn Witch from when she was young.
23 Old Compass – Lost Cemetery
Location |
Southeast Lost Cemetery |
Related NPC |
N/A |
Requirements |
Flame Spell |
Finding the Old Compass is tricky. Take the door located just south of the Lost Cemetery door and burn through the spiderwebs blocking the archway. Fall down and defeat the numerous spiders hidden in balls throughout the next room. Make your way to the wooden structure to light the braziers, unlocking the door on the northwest side of the room. From here the Compass is actually visible, but take that door and climb the next ladder on the north side of the room to light another brazier.
Continue northwest, into a room where you will have to fight a few waves of enemies. Defeat them and climb the stairs to light yet another brazier to uncover a ladder. Take the ladder and continue southeast this time. In the next room, bypass the open archway and kill the spiders blocking the path southeast. Drop down on the small ledge and keep going southeast through the door to find the Old Compass.
22 Incense – Lost Cemetery
Location |
Lost Cemetery Mausoleum |
Related NPC |
Gravedigger |
Requirements |
Defeat Demonic Forest Spirit |
After speaking to the Grey Crow on the Summit, head southwest behind the green flower pot and down the ladder. Sitting on top of the Gravedigger’s mausoleum will be the next shiny thing, a pot of Incense. Take the coffin door ramp up to the side to grab it.
The label explains that though it’s used in rites for helping the dead pass on, the main benefit of this Shiny Thing is that the smell masks the scent of rotting corpses. Maybe it’s best left where you found it, then.
21 Undying Blossom – Lost Cemetery
Location |
Lost Cemetery Tower |
Related NPC |
N/A |
Requirements |
Find Plaque |
While exploring the Lost Cemetery, you may come across a lone tower with wooden spikes coming out of it. Inside the tower, there’s a plaque that reads: “This simple structure has a twin… a hidden secret lies within.“
Elsewhere in the Lost Cemetery, just east of the Reaper Door, the tower’s twin sits in an arena with four enemies. Defeat them and head toward the tower (the perspective will shift), and enter it. There is the Undying Blossom, in a strange state in between decay and life, as though the magic here stops death from taking hold.
20 Old Photograph – Ceramic Manor
Location |
Ceramic Manor Rafters |
Related NPC |
Urn Witch |
Requirements |
N/A |
One of the few Shiny Things that has a use in-game, the Old Photograph is only obtainable after acquiring the Flame spell. Take the left exit out of the main hall of the Ceramic Manor, past the room with the chair and fireplace, and into the hallway.
Light the brazier just outside the door, and a ladder should appear. Take it up into the rafters and follow the wooden beams across to the other side to find the Old Photograph on the landing floor. On the back is a diagram to help you with a chessboard puzzle in the grounds.
19 Sludge-Filled Urn – Estate Of The Urn Witch
Location |
Urn Witch Estate |
Related NPC |
Urn Witch |
Requirements |
Hook Shot Spell |
Back in the Estate of the Urn Witch, take a left at the fountain and find the small gap in the hedges. Trudge through the bushes to the corresponding gap and climb up to the platform. Hookshot over and then slam down into the sewer gate.
Follow the considerably long and bushy path to the exit and defeat the waves of enemies blocking the gate. Keep following that path to a secluded room where the Sludge-Filled Urn is sitting on a shelf.
18 Token Of Death – Lost Cemetery
Location |
Lost Cemetery Caves |
Related NPC |
Gravedigger |
Requirements |
Hook Shot Spell |
The Token of Death can be found in the cave system leading to The Stranded Sailor. Cross over the small wooden bridge and down a ladder. In the room with a few tiered waterfalls, on the second landing, there will be a Hookshot anchor post across the rushing water.
Take it to find the Token of Death sitting on a few forgotten coffins. Its location among the waterfalls might be a nod to the River Styx and the belief that coins should be placed on the eyes of the dead to pay the ferryman.
17 Rusty Garden Trowel – Estate Of The Urn Witch
Location |
Family Tomb of the Urn Witch Estate |
Related NPC |
Urn Witch |
Requirements |
Old Photograph |
To find the Rusty Garden Trowel, first, obtain the Old Photograph from the Ceramic Manor. Turn it over to find a diagram with five X’s on it. Take the photograph back outside. On the northern edge of the Estate (head north from the fountain), there will be a chessboard with pots spaced out.
Destroy only the pots corresponding to the X’s on the Old Photograph to open a secret passageway and follow it. Near the large doors will be the Rusty Garden Trowel. This Shiny Thing is incredibly helpful for completing the game, as it will glow blue at night when there is a Life Seed on the map.
16 Captain’s Log – The Stranded Sailor
Location |
Stranded Sailor Cave |
Related NPC |
Jefferson |
Requirements |
Flame Spell |
After obtaining the Flame spell, you can activate the ladder leading to The Stranded Sailor. If you’d like to meet Jefferson, then go inside and maybe enjoy some soup. Underneath the stone stairs at the cave’s exit will be another slightly hidden passageway.
Follow it through to find the Captain’s Log sitting on a rug near some pots. From the description, it makes sense that this once belonged to Jefferson and that the friendly squid might still be hanging around.
15 Giant Arrowhead – Flooded Fortress
Location |
Flooded Fortress Arena |
Related NPC |
Reapers |
Requirements |
Defeat Frog King |
After defeating the Frog King, make sure to take the ladder located behind his watery grave in the arena and grab the Giant Arrowhead. This is one of the only Shiny Things located in a boss arena, but it just goes to show how important exploring every nook and cranny is in this game.
This shiny artifact seems to hint at prehistoric Reapers and how they evolved their weaponry using shards of their souls to delay their own deaths. That may also mean that the Reapers have been trying to get rid of the Frog King for a very long time.
14 Malformed Seed – Overgrown Ruins
Location |
Overgrown Ruins Pillar |
Related NPC |
N/A |
Requirements |
Hook Shot Spell |
The Malformed Seed is easily visible while traversing the Overgrown Ruins and stays just out of reach until later in the game. It’s not obtainable until after acquiring the Hookshot spell. After finding it, head back to the ruins and make your way to the southeast part of the map.
Climb the ladder in the southeast corner of the ruins. It will come out above one of the hidden entrances to the Mushroom Dungeon. From there, you can swing between anchor points on pillars. The Malformed Seed has been warped by a drifting soul, so it’s best to take it with you anyway.
13 Corrupted Antler – Mushroom Dungeon
Location |
Mushroom Dungeon |
Related NPC |
N/A |
Requirements |
Bomb Spell |
Once again, the Corrupted Antler is easy to spot well before it is obtainable. In the room where the first green key is located, shoot the bomb at the damaged part of the northwestern wall to blast a hole in it.
Head through and use the key on the gate underneath the pathway where the blue wizard enemy stands guard. Once you’ve either blasted it or slashed at it, you can head past to the Corrupted Antler. It supposedly looks familiar to you, but what kind of creature could have grown such a thing?
12 Magical Forest Horn – Overgrown Ruins
Location |
Overgrown Ruins Campsite |
Related NPC |
Forest Mother |
Requirements |
Speak to the Forest Mother |
The Magical Forest Horn is actually required to progress through the story of Death’s Door. To find it, head north in the Overgrown Ruins to an abandoned campsite. Next to the broken-down wagon, the Horn is sitting on the floor.
Bring it back to the Forest Mother to watch a lovely cut scene as she unravels some of the overgrowth in the area, allowing you to get into the Mushroom Dungeon.
11 Ancient Crown – Castle Lockstone
Location |
Castle Lockstone’s Ancient Door |
Related NPC |
Door Lord |
Requirements |
Slash Attack |
The main room in Castle Lockstone has multiple exits to other areas of the castle. If you go through the northwestern gate, you’ll find yourself outside among some pillars and crumbling masonry. Climb onto the far pillar and slash attack down onto the sewer gate. From here, there will be two pathways; one leads to a Soul Energy, so it is worthwhile to grab that and head back for round two.
Take the second path along the wall, passing through the main hall into another room to find the Ancient Crown sitting on the ledge above the Ancient Door. It doesn’t explain how the first Door Lord was created, though.
10 Grunt’s Old Mask – The Stranded Sailor
Location |
Stranded Sailor Beside the Bird-Masked Man |
Related NPC |
Grunt |
Requirements |
Bomb Spell, Free Grunt |
Grunt’s Old Mask is relatively easy to find. After freeing Grunt from the Mushroom Dungeon using the Bomb spell, Grunt will find their way over to The Stranded Sailor. On the floor, beside the strange man wearing a bird mask, the Grunt’s Old Mask is waiting for you to pick up.
The description states that Grunts the world over make masks to imitate their masters and that it’s possible this Grunt has got a new one now.
9 Ancient Door Scale Model – Hall Of Doors
Location |
Hall Of Doors Desk |
Related NPC |
Door Lord |
Requirements |
Flame Spell |
Upon obtaining the Flame spell, head back to the Hall of Doors and light the braziers southwest of The Stranded Sailor door. Head through the now-unlocked gate to find the Ancient Door Scale Model sitting behind a desk.
The desks floating on abandoned islands among the Hall of Doors often have interesting tidbits of information scattered on them. The clerks left in a hurry, and there were some reports that the other Reapers should probably read, too.
8 Modern Door Scale Model – Hall Of Doors
Location |
Hall Of Doors Platform |
Related NPC |
The Commission |
Requirements |
Hook Shot Spell |
Another shiny thing found in the Hall of Doors, the Modern Door Scale Model, is located behind a series of anchor points dangerously floating in the liminal space. The initial anchor location is just east of the platform with The Stranded Sailor door. Follow the hook shot anchors to find the model on another floating platform.
This shiny thing has a note attached detailing how this new version of the Doors will work and where the energy to run them will be kept. The new design makes sure that the Commission has control over everyone’s passage and might explain why so many Reapers have gone missing.
7 Rusty Bell Tower Key – Hall Of Doors
Location |
Hall Of Doors Reception |
Related NPC |
Lord of Doors |
Requirements |
Defeat Lord of Doors |
One of the last shiny things available in the game, the Rusty Bell Tower Key, is used to initiate post-game events. After defeating the Lord of Doors, the Rusty Bell Tower Key will be sitting neatly in the center of the Hall of Doors’ main office space.
Take the key over to the Lost Cemetery and the bell tower west of where you first talked with the Grey Crow to continue the game. Once you climb the tower, strike the bell with your weapon to bring out the moon, and the owls that also come out at night. There are three to locate and seven Tablets to reveal the truth.
6 Surveillance Device – Hall Of Doors
Location |
Hall Of Doors Office |
Related NPC |
Reapers |
Requirements |
Bomb Spell |
Just south of the first entrance to the main office space of the Hall of Doors, there will be a cracked wall ready to be blown up. Shoot the Bomb spell at the wall, and continue into the small office space to find the Surveillance Device on a shelf.
Although it may look like a phonograph, which typically produces sound rather than recording it, this particular item has been feeding information back to an unknown source. Information such as where certain Reapers may be stationed and how many Souls they’ve collected.
5 Shiny Medallion – Old Watchtower
Location |
Old Watchtower Storage Room |
Related NPC |
Free Crows |
Requirements |
Bomb Spell |
From the Camp of the Free Crows, take the cage elevator up to the entrance to the Old Watchtower area. Nearby, you’ll see a keyhole-shaped patch on the wall behind the elevator. Blast through it with the Bomb spell.
In a secret storage room, filled with supplies likely sequestered away by the Free Crows, you’ll find the Medallion. It’s decorated with the symbol of an eye, supposedly an ancient being that foretold the coming of the Lord of Doors, and who has since been banished.
