Genshin Impact is a game with a strong focus on narrative aspects. Every major update will usually introduce a new development to the game’s main storyline. Arriving in the Hydro Archon’s nation in the 4.0 patch marked the beginning of the game’s fourth Chapter: Fontaine.
You will take on the role of the Traveler to help a nation solve its biggest crisis once more. You will make new friends and face off against new foes, all while you try to discover clues on the whereabouts of your sibling; the true purpose of your journey. Lies Cast Shadows Under Gathered Lights is the third sub-quest in Chapter IV: Act I.
This walkthrough contains story spoilers.
How To Begin Lies Cast Shadows Under Gathered Lights
Since this sub-quest is a part of the Archon Quest Act, the conditions for triggering it are quite simple. You will just need to follow along the former sub-quest, The City of Rains and Remembrance, which will conclude once you enter the Opera Epiclese and find the seats Lyney has reserved for you and Paimon.
There is a long sequence of dialogue and a few cutscenes between the end of The City of Rains and Remembrance and the start of Lies Cast Shadows Under Gathered Lights, which corresponds to watching Lyney’s performance.
As Lyney’s performance comes to a jaw-dropping end, the quest will begin.
Look For Clues Inside The Opera House
You and Paimon are now officially responsible for serving as the Attorneys for Lyney in a trial for an abduction and murder case.
The Opera Epiclese has been cordoned off and no one is allowed in or out. As the Gardes conduct an investigation, you will be tasked with conducting your own investigation to collect clues that will help you build a case for Lyney against none other than Lady Furina herself.
There are three major clues to find during this part for the quest to move forth. However, your investigation notes will indicate a handful of undiscovered clues instead of just three as the quest objective does.
You will not finish finding every clue in the investigation notes until you’re well into the trial itself, so don’t worry too much about the empty spots.
This part of the quest has a special mechanic that will replace your elemental skill. Activating it will trigger a marker with a large AoE that will resonate with the locations of different points of interest and show them on screen for a few seconds.
Interacting with some of these points of interest will uncover clues for your notes, while others will merely provide some insight through dialogue but will be unremarkable otherwise.
Talk to every member of the Gardes present in the area, the audience member who is standing by the stairs theorizing about the occurrences, and even Lyney and Lynette to exhaust all information sources. You should also observe everything you can in the crime scene to continue. Then, you can head to the lobby.
Stepping outside will immediately trigger a dialogue scene with Navia, the boss of Spina di Rosula. She and her assistants are also interested in discovering what happened during Lyney’s performance, so she will suggest you join forces to investigate as partners.
This meeting is not optional and will happen before you can interact with the Gardes at the door to obtain the last clue that will let you proceed. Navia will help you figure some clues out later on.
Ask Lyney How He’s Doing On His End
Head back inside and talk to Lyney once you have collected all the important clues. He will guide your group to the Audience-Side Magic Box, where he will reveal how the trick leading up to the murder was supposed to work. He does not know what could have gone wrong.
This interaction will let you collect three new clues for your notes.
Search The Underground Passage For Clues
Still under Lyney’s direction, your group will access an underground area with props, a cart, and some rails. This area holds the ‘magic’ behind the magic trick. Besides this, there are more clues to be found. Investigate all points of interest to obtain four new clues for your notes.
Then, climb back up. Navia will suggest you take a snack break to brainstorm some plausible theories. Your discussion won’t yield much, save for a suspicious situation where Paimon gets accused of eating someone else’s snacks, and one clue for your notes.
At this point, there is nothing else you can find or collect. You will have to make do with what you’ve found, despite the empty spaces in your notes.
Participate In The Trial
The trial will begin at 8:00 (in game time), so you can either wait around or use the clock in the Paimon menu to time-skip. Head towards the front of the audience stands at the appointed time to begin.
Most of the trial will proceed in the form of a long cut-scene.
The defense and the prosecution will each make their own cases. At this point in the trial, Lady Furina will have the upper hand as she will catch Lyney off guard with a detail he was unaware of; the thud that was heard during the performance.
was information you and Paimon were privy to, as you were in the audience when it happened. At this point, it becomes clear Lyney is hiding something.
Then, Lady Furina drives her point forward by revealing that Lyney and Lynette are Fatui from the House of the Hearth, which is under the Knave’s direction. After learning about this, you request that the trial is adjourned because you need to speak with Lyney further.
You will leave the hall and discuss everything Lyney has been keeping a secret from you up to that point, including two new key pieces of evidence that will help you turn the trial around. You will add them to your notes.
Continue Taking Part In The Trial
Once the trial reconvenes, Furina will present a reconstruction of events that, she claims, retells the entire incident from Lyney’s perspective. This will be told to you in the form of a comic, which also dubs as a mini-game of sorts.
You will have to pay attention to the details of her reconstruction, as you will need to present specific evidence from a list of possible arguments in the right order to successfully refute her claims.
The list of arguments comes from the clues you have collected throughout the investigation.
First Solution
- Lyney enters the tunnel: no loopholes.
- Lyney attacked Halsey: refute using Lyney’s statement.
- Lyney kidnapped Halsey: refute using The Voice in the Oratrice Core Chamber.
- Lyney knocked Cowell out: refute using The Young Lady’s Clothes.
- Onstage Accident: no loopholes.
This will result in a successful refutation, which will put you back on track to prove Lyney’s innocence.
You will also confront Furina about the inaccuracy of her claim, which will prompt a screen showing your investigation notes to emerge. You will need to select the correct clue from the entire list to make your case. This clue is Strange Sound During the Magic Show.
You will expose her argument’s flaw, and she will ask you to shed light on the real culprit.
This will prompt a new mini-game that is a little different from the last.
In this new section, you need to review the case questions by selecting the corresponding gear, and choosing a piece of evidence from your notes that can serve as the answer.
Second Solution
The first Logic Chain will only present you one choice per question up until you reach the last question: “Who was the only person who could possibly have committed the crime?”
Your options for this will be Cowell, Halsey, and the possibility of a third person.
The right answer is Cowell, as he was the only one who could have possibly had access to the equipment.
Third Solution
This puzzle consists of another Logic Chain. It will be a rough reconstruction of events from what you assume is Cowell’s perspective with him as the criminal now. The answers are as follows:
- How can we envisage Lyney as having been unable to interfere with the crime? Select Lyney’s Statement.
- How can I prove there was an altercation in the tunnel? Select Strange Sound During the Magic Show.
- Who is the prime suspect currently? Select Cowell.
- Where did the missing Halsey go? None of the remaining options will lead to a correct hypothesis, as you don’t know the answer to that question.
However, this will prompt you to discuss everything with your companions, and you will consider a new angle. You will be prompted to try again, and each option will only have the correct answer for you to submit up until the last option, where the water vase will now appear as an option you can select. This will be the correct choice.
This new development in the trial will grant the last clue you need to complete your notes.
Fourth Solution
It is time to reconstruct the events in a Logic Chain once more:
- Who is the prime suspect currently? Select Cowell.
- What item did the culprit use to control the timing of the dissolution? Select Dropped Hook Rope.
- What item did the culprit use to dissolve Halsey? Select Water From the Primordial Sea.
- What item did the culprit use to hide the mechanism behind the crime? Select the Audience-Side Magic Box.
Your hypothesis will be correct, and the trial will continue.
A breakthrough from the Gardes will link Lyney as an accomplice in the crime once again. This time, Furina will present a reconstruction of events that you seem to be unable to refute by your means, as you have used up all your evidence.
Just when all seems lost, Navia will make an appearance and start going on about how a new magic trick will solve the case once and for all. She has found Halsey, who turns out to be an impostor, and the real murderer. This will bring you to the last puzzle of the quest.
Fifth Solution
Your task is to refute Furina’s reconstruction again, this time using your evidence to retell the facts from the perspective of “Halsey.”
- Lyney entered the tunnel: no loopholes.
- Halsey dissolved: refute using Strange Sound During the Magic Show.
- Infighting between Lyney and Cowell: refute using Broken Flower Vase.
- Lyney knocked Cowell out: refute using The Young Lady’s Clothes.
- Onstage Accident: no loopholes.
With this successful refutation, all that is left is to enjoy the resolution of the case as well as the last few surprises this Archon Quest Act has in store for you.
How To Find All Collectible Clues
There are sixteen overall clues in this quest that you will find and note down in the investigation notes. Most of them will play a fundamental part during the trial. You will find some of them through your own investigation, while some of them you will deduct along the way.
The trial will also reveal a few final pieces of information that will be instrumental to cracking the mystery.
