The hopeless romantics amongst us have plenty to be excited about, with intricate and intimate relationships possible with eight of the game’s main companions. So, we’ve compiled a spoiler-free list of all romanceable NPCs in your party, ranked worst to best, to help you decide exactly who’s worth giving your heart to in your playthrough.

8 Minthara: Exclusively For Players In Their Villain Era

Baldur's Gate 3 Minthara

Minthara’s love story sticks out like a sore thumb at best and feels like an afterthought at worst. To get her in the mood for romance you’ll need to make some evil choices for her to join your camp, which will lock you out of three other companions further down the line, and your party mates will have a few words for you.

Those who are determined to win the heart of the cultist Paladin leader, however, will need to commit to their dark side to keep the fires burning. Minthara detests any sign of weakness, compassion, or kindness, so this romance option often lacks the intimacy of the others.

7 Halsin: A Bearly Believable Romance

Halsin wasn’t originally romanceable in Baldur’s Gate 3, and considering he’s largely absent for the majority of Act One, it’s no surprise that his love story feels a little hollow. This shape-shifting, nature-loving druid is a great flirt and a real charmer in conversation, but the romance feels rushed, and the ending falls flat compared to many of the other companions.

Thankfully, those who want to try this grizzly geezer on for size can do so without forgoing other more intimate storylines, at least for a time, thanks to Halsin’s polyamorous relationship. He’s happy for you to do some lovin’ with other party members, but be warned – not everyone you’re interested in will be open to such an arrangement.

6 Wyll: Wyll They, Won’t They?

Early on in your adventure, you’ll meet the valiant Blade of Frontiers, Wyll, and for those looking to fall head over heels for a stereotypical hero, this love story promises plenty of chivalry and charm. If you’re playing a protector of the weak, it won’t be hard to get Wyll interested in your character.

Help him break his bonds with the half-devil Mizora and piece together who he is without his patron, and you’ll have a perfectly pleasant and respectful lover in no time. However, a romance with Wyll can lack some of the substance available in other love stories.

5 Karlach: Too Hot To Handle

Karlach wasn’t initially available as a romanceable companion in Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access, but since the game’s launch, this fiery yet friendly barbarian has become a flirty fan favourite. After having her heart replaced with an infernal engine by her boss from Hell, Karlach’s love life has been on the back burner as she’s grappled to control the destructive fires within.

Throwing yourself into her quest line and helping her get up close and personal with folks once more, opens up a cute and sentimental romance that feels sincere, although a little rushed at times. It’s worth noting, however, that given her circumstances you may find Karlach’s love story a bit bittersweet.

4 Astarion: All Bite No Bark

The rogue elf Astarion is another character you’ll meet fresh off your cruise on the Nautiloid. As Astarion is a slick-talking charlatan with a secret to hide and plenty to say for himself, you may think a courtship with him is doomed to be shallow and lighthearted. But if you scratch beneath the surface (and understand his condition), you’ll discover a surprisingly romantic love story waiting.

If you want to catch his eye, keep in mind that Astarion is distinctively on the darker side compared to your other, more heroic party members, so you’ll need to make a few callous decisions and try not to go out on a limb to save too many people. However, if you succeed, you’ll have the chance to shape Astarion’s entire character with your choices, making this love story one of the most rewarding romances.

3 Shadowheart: A Dark Heart Of Gold

Once you stumble out of the wreckage of the Nautiloid in Act I, Shadowheart will be the first companion you’ll have the opportunity to add to your party. While the game starts with her unquestionable devotion to Shar, the goddess of darkness and loss, her entire outlook can shift depending on how you engage with her.

To take your relationship to another level, show interest in her, her faith, and her story. As her trust in you grows, an endearing love story unravels, becoming one of the game’s best romances and a genuinely sweet tale. Romance aside, Shadowheart is central to Baldur’s Gate 3’s main story and a companion that’s well worth taking the time to invest in.

2 Lae’zel: Tough But Tender

This githyanki fighter isn’t here to make friends, but play your cards right and she might just be here to make lovers. As one of the first companions to propose an intimate encounter, Lae’zel’s character development and romance are a great reward if you can handle a more feisty, dominant sweetheart.

Have some patience and stick with her (even when she’s insulting you), and what starts as a purely physical attraction can bloom into a well-thought, affectionate romance. You will be privy to Lae’zel’s softer side, learn more about what drives her, and get a first-row seat to her engaging story arc.

1 Gale: The Wizard Of Waterdeep Wants To Get Deep

Headshot of Gale the Wizard in Baldur's Gate 3

Perhaps unsurprisingly, early access to Baldur’s Gate 3 saw the majority of the player base pursuing a relationship with Gale. And who could blame them? As one of the first companions available in the game, this wizard is a tough nut to crack, but once his feelings are revealed (and reciprocated), you can enjoy a tender, somewhat traditional relationship with this charming and charismatic wizard.

Gale’s romance is one of the most detailed in the game, with the budding relationship between you feeling more natural and complex than the others. If you’re looking to be wooed, you could do worse than stealing a glance in Gale’s direction, but don’t worry, as there are plenty of steamy night-time activities to partake in.
