- How To Upgrade Your Tools
Like a lot of life-sim games, you’ll have a large variety of materials to use, find, and craft with, but there’s no punching trees or grabbing bugs up by hand in Palia – if you want wood, bugs, or fish, you’ll need a tool to get them. From cutting trees to growing crops, tools are one of the most important mechanics in the game, and you’ll be using them all the time.
In this guide we’ll show you how to obtain your initial tools, how to upgrade them and what materials you’ll need for each tier, and how to keep them repaired.
To get the majority of your basic tools, you’ll need to go complete the first few main quests, particularly Welcome to Palia and Learning the Ropes.
You’ll meet with a few of the villagers of Kilima during these two quests, and they’ll introduce you to several game mechanics and skills, as well as giving you your first six tools: an axe, pick, watering can, hoe, belt, and bow.
Your final tool, a fishing rod, can be obtained from another resident independent of the tutorial quests.
Tool |
Who To Obtain It From |
---|---|
Makeshift Axe |
During Welcome to Palia, you’ll meet Ashura, who will give the axe to you after the conversation. |
Makeshift Pick |
Afterward, you’ll be sent onto Hodari at your housing plot, and he’ll give you the pick. |
Makeshift Bow |
You’ll also receive a letter in the mail from Hassian, which contains both the bow and some arrows. |
Makeshift Belt |
After completing the construction of your house, Auni will appear outside next to your mailbox. Listen to his tutorial then accept the quest Bug Catching 101, and he’ll give you the belt and several smoke bombs. |
Makeshift Fishing Rod |
Meet Einar at his fishing dock next to Kilima Lake, and he will give you the quest Fishing 101. Accept it, and he’ll give you a Makeshift Fishing Rod. |
Makeshift Hoe |
Speak to Badruu during Learning the Ropes then meet him at your housing plot, he’ll give you the hoe when you accept his quest Gardening 101. |
Makeshift Watering Can |
Also given to you by Badruu during Learning the Ropes/Gardening 101 at the same time as the hoe. |
As you progress, you’ll need better tools to be able to mine new rocks or cut down bigger trees, and that means you’ll need to upgrade your tools. Upgrading will require the new tier’s recipe, a few materials, and the previous tier of your tool.
Not only does upgrading your tools ensure you can obtain higher tier materials, but it also improves their durability, and improves what they do. For example, upgrading your Watering Can increases the amount of crops it can water at once, and upgrading your Bow increases the distance you can shoot.
To upgrade your tools, you have to improve your skill level, which means leveling Foraging, Mining, Bug Catching, Fishing, Hunting, and Gardening.
The recipes you need for the improved tools are purchased from the same characters who gave you the base tools: Ashura, Hodari, Auni, Einar, Hassian, and Badruu. In each skill, you’ll unlock a new tier of tool recipe every few levels.
At level three, you’ll unlock the Standard tier of tools.

Once you upgrade past the Makeshift tier, your tools will start to have a durability meter. Their durability will decrease with each skill task completed, such as successfully catching a fish or bug.
If your tool’s durability falls to zero, they will revert to the previous tier, and you’ll need to upgrade it again. To keep this from happening, you can repair your tools before this happens.
There are two ways to repair your tools: visiting Sifuu’s Forge and paying for it at her Repair Station or using Repair Kits at any Repair Station.
Repair Kits are automatically unlocked upon crafting any of the Standard Tools, and each time you get to a new tool tier, you unlock the ability to craft bigger bundles of them.
Unlocking standard tools allows you to craft a bundle of 20, unlock Fine tools unlocks a bundle of 40, and unlocking Exquisite tools unlocks a bundle of 60.
At Sifuu’s repair station, you can pay to repair any tool individually, or repair all of them at once for a small lump sum.
If you want to repair your tools at home, at unattended repair stations, or for free, you’ll need both Repair Kits and a Repair Station. The recipe for a Repair Station can be purchased from Hodari once you reach Mining level four and requires five Stone Bricks and ten Copper Bars.
