This means that if nothing changes, we'll get our first look at Nintendo's future no later than March 31, 2025.
Nintendo released its latest numbers this morning, and naturally, in anticipation, some thought its quarterly earnings report might contain news about the Switch's successor. Technically it is, but only because Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa took the opportunity to let the world know that nothing has changed when it comes to the studio's Switch 2 plans.
What Furukawa means by that is the Switch 2, or whatever Nintendo will call its new console, is still on track to be revealed before the end of the current fiscal year, so no later than March 31, 2025. Furukawa noted back in May, twice before, that Nintendo will reveal its next console before the end of the fiscal year. Nothing has changed in the six months since then, which means we could still get our first look at the console in the first quarter of 2025.

Nintendo Switch 2 is the worst kept secret in video game history
It's only a matter of time before the console breaks cover.
Well, technically we could hear something official about the Switch 2 even sooner. Furukawa continues to be deliberately vague about the Switch 2, and by the end of the fiscal year, that could mean an unveiling with hours until the end of March 31st, or it could mean the release of an unannounced trailer for the new console on social media this afternoon. It could really go either way or somewhere in between, and since we're talking about Nintendo, nothing would surprise me.
Nintendo still plans to unveil its next console by March 2025
So anytime between now and 11:59pm on March 31st
However, with each passing day, it seems less and less likely that a Switch 2 announcement will arrive in 2024. Nintendo still wants as many people as possible to buy a Switch over the Christmas period. Confirmation of when its successor will replace it in early 2025 could leave Nintendo stuck waiting for the next one.
While the Switch continues to sell (today's numbers showed that Nintendo sold 2.62 million units last quarter, bringing its all-time sales to 146.04 million), things seem to be slowing down. So much so that during this morning's call, Nintendo confirmed that the projected total number of Switch units sold this fiscal year has dropped from 13.5 million units to 12.5 million. He also cut his projected revenue for the year by ten percent.
It's a strange situation around, since, on the one hand, Nintendo has not officially revealed anything about its next console, and on the other hand, this is the second time that its president has acknowledged its existence, despite the lack of an official announcement. Rumors have been circulating for months at this point, and we may even know some of the first games coming to the Switch 2. It looks like titles like Pokemon Legends ZA and Metroid Prime 4 Beyond will be on the Switch 2, along with a trailer for Yooka-Replaylee has subtly hinted that it will be playable on Nintendo's next console.
