Nintendo the ongoing investigation into Switch users and modders accused of piracy is far from over, as a recent federal court filing said the company is looking for more targets to serve. The news comes after Nintendo launched a lawsuit against a prominent Switch modder accused of selling pirated Switch games.
The latest investigation is just part of Nintendo's long-running legal battles to protect its intellectual property, as the company has a history of using the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to crack down on information leaks and websites that distribute ROMs and emulators of its games and consoles . Earlier in 2024, Nintendo agreed to a $2.4 million settlement in a lawsuit against Tropic Haze, the creators of the Yuzu Switch emulator, which has since been removed from code repositories. Although the Yuzu project was shut down, Tropic Haze reaffirmed its stance against game piracy.

While Nintendo has already had a busy year in the courtroom, the gaming giant said it is moving forward with more legal notices. According to a filing from the US District Court in Washington State (and confirmed by Game File's Steven Totillo), Nintendo is pursuing more individuals following its recent investigation into a notorious Switch pirate. After Nintendo tracked down and sued James “Archbox” Williams, the company said the SwitchPirates subreddit, which Williams moderated, was under investigation. At the time of writing, the SwitchPirates subreddit has over 216,000 registered members. Nintendo previously won a lawsuit against Williams after he failed to represent himself in court. Nintendo is also seeking court authorization to subpoena the business records of Reddit, Discord, GitHub, Cloudflare, Google and domain hosts GoDaddy, Namecheap and Tucows to track down Williams' alleged associates.
Nintendo is looking for more faces in its legal campaign against piracy
- Nintendo's filing in US District Court says the company is seeking more individuals as part of an ongoing piracy investigation.
- Nintendo is looking for people associated with James “Archbox” Williams, who the company is suing for piracy and copyright infringement.
- Williams lost a decision on an application against Nintendo after failing to represent himself in court.
- As part of the investigation, Nintendo is looking to subpoena business documents from sites like Reddit, Discord and GitHub.
When Williams was sued in June 2024, Nintendo filed a separate lawsuit against Modded Hardware, which sold MIG Switch devices and mods that often included pirated copies of Nintendo games. Modded Hardware leader Ryan Daly previously received a cease and desist order in March 2024, but continued to sell MIG Switch devices until the lawsuit was filed.
With numerous legal victories for the Nintendo name, it is clear that the company will not tolerate piracy of its properties. As the release of the successor console, the Switch, approaches, only time will tell how Nintendo's further research will go.
