Key conclusions
- To have an unforgettable experience, players need to feel connected to their JRPG group members.
- Some games have implemented EXP exchange systems to keep party members level.
- Games like Pokemon X&Y allow you to toggle the EXP share for the player's choice.
In all JRPGs of all subgenres, whether epic fantasy or urban fantasy adventure, the party is what determines how memorable the cast of characters is. If players don't feel attached to the people or creatures they use in battle, then there will be no connection or spark to the story, and things will go down the drain, very quickly. Leveling up these characters is a major component of many games where part of the appeal lies in discovering what skills they can use.

8 Ways Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake keeps its old school JRPG roots
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake adds a fresh coat of paint to this JRPG classic, while still retaining much of what made the original so beloved.
But the problem with some JRPGs when the player feels comfortable with a certain group of characters is that other characters are often sidelined. Often times, especially in tough boss battles, it's important to have multiple characters leveled up and ready to fight, and it can take a lot of time to train and train each character individually to a high level. These JRPGs get around this with interesting EXP exchange systems that keep the entire party relatively equal in power. The rankings on this list are determined by how efficiently and effectively experience is shared between group members, followed by other quality-of-life or novelty factors to break ties between games that share experience in a similar way.
7 Persona 3 reboot
A slightly confusing mechanic that does a good job of splitting experience
- Released
- February 2, 2024

- OpenCritic rating
- Powerful
Cult Persona 3 was the game that helped define what the series is today, beyond just being a spin-off of the old one Shin Megami Tensei series. Today, this game is the first slightly rough, but everyone's favorite title in the great “modern” trilogy Person in the games, thanks in no small part to the slick and stylish combat that helped the series stand out from its contemporaries and origins.
Experience is distributed evenly among all party members regardless of combat participation. This means that the tactic for leveling up lower level characters is to have them fight in smaller groups, so the experience is distributed in large chunks. However, the system can remain confusing, as sometimes hidden factors or things like level differences will cause a character to gain or lose a percentage of that experience once it's shared between the party.
6 The legend of the dragoon
A great JRPG with great combat
The legend of the dragoon is a fantastic title with a mature story similar in aesthetic and theme to the later Final Fantasy title and builds on that story with some top-notch JRPG combat. The combination of party members and how they interact together is vital to creating powerful combos and maximizing damage to the player.
Experience is distributed among party members in an efficient and fair manner. Active party members gain experience, listed party members gain half that amount, and dropped party members receive no experience. So the party still continues to grow with Darth and whoever is on the front lines, but players who have favorite characters can still watch them grow faster.
5 Pokemon X&Y
Changes experience share but allows player choice
Pokemon X and Y

- OpenCritic rating
- Powerful
One of the most important changes that happened with the new Pokemon titles such as Scarlet and purple it's a share of experience that automatically rewards creatures in the party with less experience compared to the pokemon that last hit, similar to other entries on this list. Many players prefer the trials of the older games, where the experience can be shared with one or at most two non-battle Pokemon.

Gamers who enjoy coming-of-age tales in fiction shouldn't ignore the following JRPGs.
X and Y found a middle ground between the two, as experience sharing is now a key element that can be turned on or off at will, granting experience to all participants or, for those looking for a challenge, to none other than those actively engaged.

One thing that many players note Three houses – especially for those new to the series or the SRPG genre, it's hard to gain experience. It is not just given immediately after battles, but must be earned by individual characters.
Assigning characters as Adjutants means that a student not engaged in battle takes on a support role for an active character, increasing their utility as well as gaining a percentage of experience. It's an incredibly new and exciting way to share experiences.
3 Shin Megami Tensei: Revenge
An epic theological JRPG with excellent party management
- Released
- June 14, 2024
- OpenCritic rating
- Powerful
One of the most difficult Shin Megami Tensei titles available today Shin Megami Tensei Revenge doesn't hold players' hands, and people will try to maximize the experience their demons get. Fortunately, this title has an incredibly intuitive experience sharing system. Demons on the list gain less experience compared to demons that have seen battle, which is standard fare among entries on this list.
However, there are wonders that can be cast that increase the standard percentage of experience gained by the demons in the list – and players who take the time to acquire these wonders are rewarded with a more cohesive party.
2 Final Fantasy 13
Experience is shared equally to keep everyone level
- Released
- March 9, 2010
- Developer(s)
- Square Enix
- OpenCritic rating
- Weak
Final Fantasy 13 is still remembered as one of the best titles in the series to date, with a unique urban fantasy aesthetic that is incredibly difficult to replicate. Each of the main characters has their own unique personality and flair that makes them memorable and enjoyable to play.
Experience is given to all party members at the same rate, regardless of whether they were among the three active characters in battle or not. This means that players can freely switch between characters at will without having to worry about grinding to make certain characters as viable as the rest of the party.
1 Chrono Trigger
Opus JRPG, egalitarian with experience
A very influential JRPGChrono Trigger enjoys experience indiscriminately. Similarly Final Fantasy 13all party members, whether they have been in combat or not, gain the same amount of experience.
This allows players to experiment with new party combinations on the fly. Chrono Trigger gets ranked slightly higher because getting experience and leveling up is generally easier than getting Final Fantasy 13.
