James Gunn was pleased to announce one of the new films greenlit by DC Studios. He also confirmed that it will be made in collaboration with Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
Gunn has worked on several projects for the DC Universe, including Superman Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Brave and the Bold, and much more. The co-chairman and COO of DC Studios recently announced the name of the newest film project they will be working on once it is approved. It will be an animated film about two of Batman's sidekicks.
The director has moved to X, formerly known as Twitter, and has announced that their next film will be an animated project focusing on the two Robins in Batman Universe – Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. “Over the moon to announce DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures' newest animated feature in theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin…or rather, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd,” Gunn wrote. “The first feature film from the visionary Swaybox, a blend of animation, puppetry and CGI, scripted by the wonderfully talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves 6th & Idaho. This is something special.” The announcement received a lot of feedback from fans who were enthusiastic about the project. They were very excited to see two versions of Robin on the big screen. “Robin finally got love,” commented one with a fire emoji.
Shortly after Gunn made the announcement, there were various speculations about what the plot of the film would be. Apparently, the film will focus on the origin story of the two Robins rather than their connection to Batman. It will also be separate from Matt Reeves' current projects The Batman and Penguinon Variety. Instead Dynamic duet will bring Grayson and Todd to the same timeline. They will be introduced as young people who start out as friends, but whose opinions clash, which could affect their future. Although both Grayson and Todd served as Batman's sidekicks in DC Comics, they did so on different timelines. Also, Grayson became the superhero Nightwing and Todd became the anti-hero Red Hood. The publication also refutes claims that the two Robins will start out as a pair of outlaws in the film.
Dynamic duet is a promising storyline that could potentially open up more stories involving Batman known associates. In the comics, Grayson and Todd do not appear in the same timeline. Grayson, the original Robin, remained Batman's loyal sidekick from his debut in 1940 until he became Nightwing in 1984. Meanwhile, Todd took over as Batman's sidekick in 1983 until his death in 1988 at the hands of the Joker. A supervillain beats him to death, scatters explosives, and leaves him to die from the blast. Batman arrived too late to find Todd dead. However, he was resurrected when Superboy punched through a reality-altering wall from the heavenly dimension. Talia used the Lazarus Pit to help Todd regain his powers and memory. Feeling betrayed by Batman not killing the Joker to avenge his death, Todd assumed a new identity as Red Hood.
Anna Dynamic duet very interesting, not only because this time the film will highlight two Robins in Batman universe, but more so that fans will see Todd and Grayson side by side, traveling the same path before parting ways. Grayson and Todd represent different approaches to being Robin, with the former symbolizing the upbeat and loyal sidekick and the latter embodying a darker and more rebellious figure. It's definitely something to keep an eye on.
