For 25 years, people all over the world have been happily entertained by the silly adventures of a sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea, SpongeBob SquarePants. More than 300 episodes of the popular Nickelodeon animated series tell the story of a chef of underwater fry and his friends, but SpongeBob SquarePants' adventures were not limited to television. Numerous movies, TV spinoffs, stage adaptations, books, comics, and of course video games have fascinated people over the years with the snail-wielding sponge. However, in the 2010s, the number of video games based solely on the world of SpongeBob dropped dramatically. That was until the surprise release of several SpongeBob games in the early 2020s, including one announced for 2025.

The future of SpongeBob SquarePants in video games
While SpongeBob's recent resurgence in video games has been mixed, that hasn't stopped fans of catching jellyfish from being the star of future games. In a recent trailer, the sequel from THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios Cosmic Shake teased, seeming to complete the trilogy that began with Rehydrated. Little information is known about this upcoming Spongebob game, but it has a 2025 release date. This game is expected to be a third-person platformer and will play similar to both Rehydrated and Cosmic Shake. Only a few gameplay videos have been shown, showing SpongeBob walking around as a skeleton and his normal self in the dark, deep-sea city of Rock Bottom.
Story-wise, it's new SpongeBob SquarePants The main antagonist of the game seems to be the ghost of the Flying Dutchman, who appears repeatedly throughout the trailer. The trailer has also been dubbed the “Official Gameplay Trailer for Halloween” and features plenty of spooky scenes, so The Flying Dutchman as the antagonist could work. A mysterious pink portal opens and pulls in buildings and buses and seemingly strikes the inhabitants with lightning. Bosses from the previous games also appeared, such as Squidward who transforms into a giant octopus and Miss Shell who is a witch. Both SpongeBob and Patrick are little ghosts at the end of the trailer, and they'll probably have to use those forms to save Bikini Bot again.
