Key conclusions
- Earlier this week, a featurette featuring Keanu Reeves as Shadow in Sonic 3 was released.
- The interview also reveals new footage from the film, including one particularly teasing shot.
- A very short cutscene is shown that seems to confirm that Super Shadow has teamed up with Super Sonic.
A new interview with Keanu Reeves as Shadow in Sonic 3 seems to have accidentally revealed the first look at Super Shadow and Super Sonic.
Ever since Shadow the Hedgehog was first teased in the credits leading up to Sonic 2, fans have speculated that the next film will closely follow the character's origin and will mostly act as a retelling of Sonic Adventure 2. Ignoring how many Sonic games that skip all, what we've seen of Sonic 3 so far seems to confirm that this is indeed the case.
Relatives
I can't wait to see the kid get killed in Sonic The Hedgehog 3
In the upcoming triquel, Maria will be completely wasted.
While there are already some obvious differences between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 3 (such as Shadow with a gun), the similarities mean that fans have a long list of story beats to expect to see, such as Maria getting shot. The jury is still out on that one, but a new interview seems to have accidentally confirmed one big thing to come.
Earlier this week, following the release of the final Sonic 3 trailer, Screen Rant released a behind-the-scenes featurette in which the cast of Sonic 3 talk about Keanu Reeves as Shadow. In between interviews and shots showing Reeves and the rest of the cast in the cockpit, new Sonic 3 footage is also shown.
While most of the footage isn't that revealing, there is one shot in the middle of the featurette that teases a pretty big moment. As Twitter user KellytoyDK pointed out, a brief shot of the Space Colony Ark is shown preparing to launch a massive laser at Earth, presumably piloted by the Robotniks.
When the Space Colony Ark is shown, two golden figures can be seen flying towards it and seeming to try to stop it. I probably don't need to tell you this, but this seems like a random first showing of Super Sonic and Super Shadow. Although it was supposed to happen and was heavily teased in recent trailers, showing it here really feels like a mistake.
This won't come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Shadow's characters, but it suggests that he and Sonic will eventually stop fighting each other and team up to defeat the two Robotniks. Whether or not Sonic 3 will continue Adventure 2's ending remains to be seen, so we have at least one big surprise.
