How Bleach's power system serves to write characters

Key conclusions

  • Bleach's Zanpakutou power system is intricately tied to character writing.
  • Characters become stronger through self-acceptance, not through conventional training.
  • Soul Reapers at peace with their Zanpakutou reach their true powerful potential.

Unlike many other famous shounen series, Bleach it's a character-driven story. The nuanced characters created by Tite Kubo drive the plot forward. All in Bleach revolves around them. Kubo's talent for writing characters is so inherent to Bleach that the main power system is directly related to him. Zanpakutou A Soul Reaper is not just their weapon, but an extension of themselves. Reapers of Souls become stronger not only through learning, but also through self-knowledge and acceptance.

Zanpakutou is a power system that is all about character writing. Let's find out how the main characters of Soul Reaper demonstrate this. Ichigo, Renji, Rukia, Kenpachi and others. Soul Reapers grow as humans and then as warriors.

The true nature of the Zanpakutou

An extension of one's self

Each soul reaper is given a hollow katana called an asauthi. These swords were forged by O-Etsu Nimaya of the Royal Palace, the creator of the Zanpakutou. During their training, each Soul Reaper imprints on their Asauti until eventually the Asauti evolves into a Zanpakutou and manifests the expansion of its master's soul as an independent spirit. However, this process is not exactly the same for every person. Ichigo manifested both Zangetsu without having the Asauti as he is not a normal Soul Reaper. While Toshiro Hitsugaya manifested Hyorinmaru long before he even became a Soul Reaper.

Thank you, Zangetsu, you…me

In Ichigo's case, it is clearly stated that Zangetsu is an extension of Ichigo and just like him. They represent two sides of it. So while Ichigo and Zangetsu's relationship isn't the same for everyone, the nature of the Zanpakutou is identical for every Soul Reaper. Randy is Zabimaru, Rukia is Sode no Shirayuki, and Byakuya is Senbonzakura. Zanpakutou are both companions and the same as their masters. The way Soul Reapers get along with their Zanpakutou reflects how they get along with themselves. Accepting yourself means accepting your Zanpakutou.

True growth leads to true strength

Only as strong as they allow themselves to be

Ichigo is seen entering the world of huge skyscrapers without floors. This is Ichigo's inner world where he meets and talks to Zangetsu. So far this is only seen with Ichigo in the manga, novel “You can't be afraid of your own world” reveals that Shuuhei Hisagi also has an inner world where he meets Kazeshini. Thus, each soul reaper has its own inner world. Most of the Zanpakuto spirits are not featured in the manga except for Zabimaru, Nozarashi, Katen Kyokotsu, Hyorinmaru, and Kazeshini. But every Soul Reaper has one.

How a Soul Reaper gets along with their Zanpakutou determines how powerful they become. Yumichiko Ayasegawa actively hates his fellow Ruri'ir Kujaka for his unconventional abilities, which are ill-suited to Squad 11's fighting style. Yumichiko is obsessed with beauty, and because he finds Ruri'ir Kujaka ugly, the two are often at odds with each other. Because of this, Yumichika is unable to fully access his power. The Soul Reaper must be in the world with his Zanpakutou to gain full power. Yumichiko has an unspoken internal conflict with himself, ashamed of his power given his position.

The same goes for Shuuhei Hisagi and Izuru Kira. They both hate their Zanpakutou because of their sinister appearance and abilities. They want more heroic abilities, but instead they have dark weapons made to kill. Renji Abarai is a lieutenant with great ambitions, but he doubts himself more than anyone. He does not consider himself capable of such greatness as he could achieve. He confines himself to living in Byakuya's shadow, which is why Zabimaru hasn't fully accepted him for years. Renji forced himself to become stronger without fully speaking to Zabimaru, he was stifling his own growth and when he reached Bankai, Zabimaru only told him half of his name. Once he learned his true name, he unlocked his true Bankai, the powerful Soo Zabimaru. Ichigo is the best version of this system. He lived for years rejecting Zangetsu, limiting his own power. Once he accepted it, he reached his true power.

Nice to meet you, Kenpachi Zaraki, my name is…

While most other Shōnen series have characters become stronger through conventional training, Soul Reapers become stronger through understanding and accepting themselves. This is one of Bleach's main themes: self-acceptance. Tite Kubo depicts the journey of self-discovery that real people go through in his characters. The process of talking with their Zanpakutou acts as a narrative image of self-discovery. Soul Reapers talk to their own souls, searching deep within themselves for answers. People go through important transformations through meaningful experiences, after which they become more self-confident and self-possessed. Ichigo accepts Zangetsu, Zabimaru accepts Renji, and by accepting and finding themselves, they become stronger. Zanpakutou are much more than a power system, they are heavy storytelling devices. Bleach's narrative is all about the characters, and its core power system is built to deliver on that idea.

A Soul Reaper's Zanpakutou isn't just a weapon and its special abilities, it's how they perceive themselves and embody themselves in their world. Their strengths reflect their own personality and relationship with themselves. A soul reaper who quarrels with himself will never reach his true power. A soul reaper who lives at peace with his soul will be a force to be reckoned with. A character-driven story with a character-driven power system.
