Hideo Kojima's OD could learn a thing or two from Margaret Qualley's recent project

An upcoming horror game from Kojima Productions, ODwas one of the more obscure yet intriguing projects teased by the developer. After Death Stranding and its upcoming sequel, OD could be next in line as Kojima Productions' next release. At the moment, very little is known about it OD and what it entails, but Hideo Kojima has confirmed that it is a horror story.

After Kojima Silent Hills was suddenly canceled by Konami, leaving many disappointed that the mind-crafted horror game Metal Gear would never come true. however, OD rekindles the horror story craze under Kojima. In typical Hideo Kojima fashion, OD already looks like an experimental approach to the genre. So far, one of the few things known about the project is its cast. Starring actors Sophia Lillis, Hunter Shafer and Uda Kier ODThe first trailer is disturbing, but there are also rumors that Kojima's former employee will play a role. Margaret Qualley played a double role in it Death Strandingand when she appears in ODher latest movie Substancecould serve as a great inspiration for Kojima.

Hideo Kojima may find some creepy inspiration for OD in substance

One of the best horror movies of the year

Rumors of Margaret Qualley's involvement in Hideo Kojima's horror project began back in 2022 after writer Tom Henderson announced the casting decision. At the time, the game was rumored to be called “Overdose”, short for OD may lend some weight to Henderson's claims. It's no secret that Kojima is a big fan of pop culture. From movies to music, he has been greatly inspired by many works. He also seems to keep a close eye on the work of the actors he works with, and this year Margaret Qualley has made waves with three different projects to her credit.

  • Dolls for departure
  • Types of kindness
  • Substance

While her other two performances were excellent, her role as Sue in the Substance really stood out. The satire's heavy blood is infused with intense body horror that Kojima would likely have a field day with. Based on the trailer to ODit seems like the game might lean into more psychological territory, but there's no telling what Kojima has in store. Depending on how far the psychological aspects are pushed, OD can still cause body horror through hallucinations. Either way, Hide Kojima's love of pop culture and admiration for the actors he works with probably mean he saw Substanceand if so, it could easily be a source of powerful horror inspiration.

Hideo Kojima used to do body horror

As a tease for the now cancelled Silent HillsKojima led out PTthe viral “game teaser” that horror fans are still talking about. While minimal, PT was incredibly effective, with games like Makeup drawing attention to its eerie first-person atmosphere. Although PT doesn't descend into full-blown body horror, it still rocks; Lisa, a ghost that wanders the endless corridor, has a distorted face that was mutilated from being stabbed in the eye by her husband. Even more grotesque, however, is the wriggling fetus lying in the bathroom sink.

OD remains mysterious but compelling

Almost a year has passed since then OD has been announced and little is known about the game yet. While the wait continues, Kojima will hopefully shed more light on his horror project soon. With The Game Awards coming up, there's always the chance of a surprise update, but only time will tell.
