Gwent from The Witcher 3 is finally getting a physical release

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best games of the last decade, and for some people it's a contender to be one of the best games of all time. The game is so good that it has a smaller game that many of you wish was not limited to your continent adventures. I'm talking about Gwent, of course, and I have some very good news for those of you who have been waiting over a decade for the card game to hit the real world.

As Eurogamer first reported, nearly a decade after CD Projekt Red introduced Gwent to the world through The Witcher 3, the popular in-game card game is getting a physical release. The real-life version of Gwent is created by the British board game specialists Hachette Boardgames, the Ghost Adventure team, Imagician and various other board games, and is an officially licensed product of the Witcher, as it has received the full support of CDPR.

We won't be waiting long between the presentation and the release of The Witcher 4.

It's not a watered down version of Gwent either. The physical version will include more than 400 cards and a game mat to accurately replicate the experience of Geralt playing in the tavern on his own table. The listing for Gwent is already up on Hachette's website, though you can't seem to pre-order it yet. It costs £44 ($57) and is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2025. That means we could be sitting down and playing Gwent for real this time next year.

It's a little shocking that a physical edition of Gwent has become a reality. This card game is one of the best in-game board games ever made, and since it only uses cards and a playmat, making a real version always seemed like it would be a solid home run for CDPR that would be relatively easy to pull off.

She had her hands full when it came to protecting the Witcher studio. After its developers finished working on The Witcher 3 and its DLC, they moved on to Cyberpunk 2077. It took a lot of extra work to fix that game, and then it moved on to Phantom Liberty. Now we also know that everything is ready for The Witcher 4, which the studio recently promised will be bigger and better than its predecessor and Cyberpunk. I'm not sure where the time would have been found to pull off a physical version of The Witcher 3 card game in the midst of all of this, so CDPR was likely out of place when Hachette offered to spearhead the project.

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, one of the most critically acclaimed role-playing games in recent history, Geralt searches for Ciri of Cintra. He's not the only one on the hunt, though—the pair must also contend with the Wild Hunt, supernatural creatures of great power. In late 2022, CD Projekt added two expansion packs, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and brought an enhanced version of the game to modern consoles.
