Yotei's ghostcontinuation Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch Productions was undoubtedly the biggest reveal during the recent State of Play demo. The biggest surprise to many was the developer's decision to leave Tsushima and Jin Sakai's story behind, instead introducing a new setting and a new heroine. While some fans have been waiting for Jin to return, this new direction seems to be perfect for Ghost series. This allows the developers to keep the great features that fans love while offering fresh perspectives, time periods and regions very similar to Assassin's Creed series.
Little is known so far Yotei's ghostwhich is currently slated for release in 2025. While details are scarce – especially when it comes to the story – the reveal trailer alone highlighted a few differences from Ghost of Tsushima that some fans may have missed. Let's explore the biggest confirmed changes that will make the upcoming game both fresh and familiar.
1 New main character
Players take on the role of a wandering female warrior, Atsu
U Ghost of TsushimaJin Sakai quickly became a fan favorite due to his depth and complexity of character. This led to the decision to leave it Yotei's ghost a surprise to many, although it makes a lot of sense. According to the developers, the main pillar of the series is the concept of a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, which allows them to introduce new, original characters and stories with each installment.
U Yotei's ghostplayers will take on the role of Atsu, a female wanderer who is hunted by many ronin for reasons that have yet to be revealed. Although the details of Atsu's history and origins are still under wraps, she already looks intriguing as a skilled katana wielder. Given Sucker Punch's track record, there's no doubt that they will once again be a compelling and memorable hero.
2 A new region of Japan
Players will explore the map of Mount Yotei and its surroundings
Before the autopsy Yotei's ghostmany pondered the possibility Ghost of Tsushima 2 reusing the islands of Tsushima and Iki as the setting. Fortunately, the developers chose a brand new region of Japan. Players will now explore the high peak of Mount Yotei and its surroundings, located in the center of Ezo (modern day Hokkaido).
Exact size Yotei's ghost the map is still unknown, but it is expected to be at least as vast as the territories in the previous game. Based on the trailer, the new areas will be visually stunning, with a variety of environments including snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and bustling settlements. The most striking sight is undoubtedly Mount Yotei itself, a colossal peak that looms on the horizon as players explore the lands at its base.
3 A new era
The events take place more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima.
As confirmed by the events of Yotei's ghost takes place in 1603, more than 300 years later Ghost of Tsushima. While the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274 was a fascinating period to study, jumping a few centuries later seems no less intriguing. Set in the early Edo period (also known as the Tokugawa period), this marks the end of traditional feudal Japan.
Reveal trailer for Yotei's ghost showed notable Western influences, with authentic music and the mood of a lone, wandering hero motivated by personal reasons, in contrast to Genie's honorable mission in the first game. Given the time gap between the two titles, it's unlikely that players will run into familiar characters. However, the events of Ghost of Tsushima may surface in the sequel as legends of a vengeful ghost from the past.
4 New types of weapons
Players can expect new weapons, including firearms
Given the more advanced time period, it's no surprise that players can expect new weapons Yotei's ghost. While Jin Sakai primarily relied on his katana and tanto for stealth kills, Atsu displayed two-handed katanas and even the use of matchlock muskets instead of traditional bows. In one segment of the demonstration video, Atsu also wielded a kusarigama—a traditional Japanese weapon that combines a sickle (kama) and a chain (kusari)—to deal quick and effective blows to her enemies.
Combat Art Ghost of Tsushima was already a special feature, and it seems likely that it will expand to new heights in the sequel. If Sucker Punch can retain the satisfying feel of katana combat while introducing new weapons to master, upgrade, and wield, players are sure to be thrilled.
5 A new musical instrument
Instead of Jin's flute, players will play the shamisen
One of the notable changes compared to Yotei's ghost shows a trailer for the new musical instrument that Atsu carries on his journey. While Jin Sakai played the shakuhachi (flute) to play different tunes and change the weather Ghost of TsushimaAtsu will play the shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument (also called shamisen or sangen). This change in musical instruments may reflect the western mood of the game and serve a similar function to the flute, potentially affecting the environment.
In the reveal footage, the shamisen is always seen on Atsu's back, which caused mixed reactions from fans. It's unclear if players will be able to hide the instrument from the character model, but given that the shamisen is larger than a flute, it makes sense that it remains visible throughout the game.
