Fallout: The 16 Best Villains in the Franchise, Ranked
The Fallout franchise introduced a bevy of wasteland villains to contend with, so today we're counting down its best villains.
The Ghoul from the Fallout TV show provides the perfect template for Fallout 5's antagonist
Fallout often featured villains of the same type
Throughout the franchise, players have faced some iconic villains. Figures like the Master and Frank Horrigan were impressive and effective foes who provided an ideological and physical challenge to the tough Vault Dwellers. In the latter case, having close ties to the nefarious Enclave – a group made up of the remnants and descendants of the pre-war military and government elite – marked a trend that accelerated and continued throughout the series. The Enclave often became the main villain in later entries, with Fallout 3 being the most prominent example.
There were other threats, for example Fallout: New Vegas' Caesar's Legion and Mr. House. While fans could align themselves with either side in this entry, they were both presented as the more evil choice. In other cases and in accordance with Precipitationcommon themes, supporters fought against madmen or fanatical scientists, as with Fallout 4The Institute and the Enclave are still present in the background or as a secondary threat.
The fact is that the series has covered this ground well, and the angles are ones that fans have encountered several times. Fallout 5 provides an opportunity to try and incorporate and build on the differences in these elements from the show, potentially treating a lone outlaw-type character as a villain who relentlessly pursues the player, much like the Wolverine.
How the Fallout Show's Werewolf Could Be the Basis for Fallout 5's Main Villain
Walton Goggins' portrayal of the Wolverine in the TV series was a highlight for many. The Wolverine's skills and hands-on professionalism, combined with his world-weary sense of cynicism, made him the perfect foil to the naïve and innocent Lucy MacLean. This dynamic and approach fit in easily Fallout 5and would also have some overtones of the Courier's tale of New Vegaswho, as already mentioned, violated some of the previous conventions for his antagonists.
Fallout 5 could take the swagger of the Wolverine character as a starting point, and have his villain be a skilled hunter who tracks down the protagonist for their own ulterior motives. This would be a stark contrast to the return of the Enclave or another Institute-like group. Instead of going back to one of the PrecipitationTraditional factions that previously acted as a villain, looking for Wolverine's antagonistic traits, could provide a new and interesting direction for Precipitationthe next major villain.
