Every great class blade we know is in one piece

Meito, also known as Legendary Swords, Famed Blades and similar monikers, are, as each name implies, specially made blades that enjoy the highest renown. Those well versed in blades will be able to spot them instantly, and they tend to command both high prices and great owners. Meito are individually given “grades” based on their strength and quality.

One Piece: 5 Non-Canon Characters That Make No Sense

While technically all non-canon characters “don't make sense” in One Piece, these characters seem to be particularly at odds with the main canon.

Great Rank Blades are the second highest grade blades, just below the 12 highest blades. There are only 21 of these Meito. The five currently known to viewers come from the Wano country, known for its fine craftsmen, and are currently in the possession of those with connections to the area. This list documents all currently known Grand Rank blades.

6 Ichimondi water

One of Zoro's blades

zoro using wado ichimonji in one piece

  • Current Owner: Roronoa Zoro
  • Creator: Shimotsuki Kouzaburou

The Wado Itimonji is a katana that has belonged to Zoro since his attempt to become the strongest swordsman in the world. It was previously owned by his friend and training partner, Shimatsuki Quinn. Wado Ichimonji was made by her grandfather, Kouzaburou, who brought it with him from Wano. After settling in East Blue, he helped found the village of the same name, Shimatsuki. Kuzabur's relic would later be used by both his son, Koshiro, and his granddaughter, Kuina.

Quinn and Zoro were Koshiro's best students, resulting in a close friendship and rivalry. In a serious fight, Quinn used Wado Ichimonji and reliably defeated Zoro with it. She didn't celebrate much though, as her Kushiro's sexist beliefs that women couldn't wield the sword as well bothered her, especially as she neared puberty. Zoro assured her that skill and determination were the only things that really mattered, and the two friends swore to each other that one of them would become the strongest swordsman in the world.

After her sudden death at the age of eleven, Zoro asked for the sword so he could fulfill his promise to Quinn. Koshiro allowed it, and it has remained with the swordsman ever since. In a way, it's still technically a Shimatsuki relic, as Zoro's paternal grandmother, Furiko, was also a Shimatsuki. Ichimonji's wado is prominent enough that Tashigi was offended that a mere pirate claimed ownership of it.

5 Ame is not Habakiri

One of Oden's blades

One Piece Oden Enma Ame no Habakiri

  • Current Owner: Kazuki Momanosuke (Previous)
  • Creator: Kazuki Sukiyaki

The Ame no Habakiri was one of Kazuki Oden's signature swords, used in his own variant of the two-sword style. The blade has a celestial color scheme of white and gold. It shares its name with the legendary Japanese katana used by the Shinto god Susanoo to slay the eight-headed serpent Yamato No Orochi. This distinction is likely because it was previously one of several weapons to damage Kaido in his dragon form.

This sword was specifically forged by Kozuki Sukiyaki, Oden's father, who is a master. After the death of Sukiyaki's son, he somehow managed to get Ame no Habakiri back. Although Sukiyaki wants Mamanosuke to possess his relic, he still does not consider himself worthy of wielding his father's sword.

4 Enma

Demonic Meito

  • Current Owner: Roronoa Zoro
  • Creator: Shimotsuki Kouzaburou

The Enma was another of Oden's iconic swords, which was something of a demonic counterpart to the more heavenly Ame no Habakiri, which had a dark purple and red color scheme. Like Wado Ichimonji, it was previously created by Kuzaburu and is currently owned by his distant relative Zoro. In particular, Kuzaburo believed that Enma was superior to even Wado Ichimondi.

While the inheritance of Ame no Habakiri was assumed by Mamanosuke's primogeniture, Enma belonged to his younger sister Hiyori. However, Hiyori traded Zoro's blade in exchange for Shyusui.

One Piece: Each Zoan Devil Fruit with multiple models

A look at the Zoan Devil Fruits, specifically the ones that have “models” and the different forms they take.

Like Ame no Habakiri, Enma was one of the two blades that scarred Kaido years ago, resulting in the distinctive 'x' shaped scar on his chest. The blade can release its wielder's Aromant Haki, resulting in a fearsome reputation. Zoro's arm was exhausted until he established control with the blade, and it would have apparently sapped the entire body of a smaller swordsman. Not only did Zoro injure Kaido once more with Enma, but he also used it to defeat King, which is especially notable considering he is of the stable Moon type.

Sukiyaki states that if Zoro can transform Enma into a permanent Black Blade, it could raise the mark, potentially becoming a higher rank sword. A strange detail about Enma is that her size seems to shift to accommodate a more normal sized Zoro and a larger Oden. This discrepancy is also a feature of Ame no Habakiri, but is more noticeable with Enma, as it is seen to be wielded by two swordsmen of different sizes and proportions to each.

3 Nida Kitetsu

Cursed sword

Luffy holds the Nidai Kitetsu

  • Current owner: Kazuki Sukiyaki
  • Creator: Kotetsu

The Nidai Kitetsu is a supposedly cursed katana from the Kitetsu school, all of which are said to bring gruesome death to their wielders. It was produced by Kotetsu, an ancestor of the Kazuki clan. The current owner of the blade is his descendant Kozuki Sukiyaki. Sandai Kitetsu, one of the other Kitetsu Meito, is currently owned by Zoro, who found him in Lugtown and decided to test his luck against the blade. Notably, the Sandai Kitetsu is the only Zoro sword currently in use that is below Grand Rank, being simply a Rank Blade (the lowest grade of Meito, of which there are an unspecified number).

The Kitetsu Meito category seems to have declined the more recently they were made. The Nidai Kitetsu is of a lower grade than the Shodai Kitetsu, a blade made before the creation of the Katetsu, but higher than the Sandai Kitetsu that was made by Sukiyaki, who is still alive. Sukiyaki borrowed a blade from Luffy, whose attitude towards weapons was heavily criticized by Zoro. Notably, Luffy threw the sword instead of dueling people directly with it. It subsequently returned to Sukiyaki's possession as the Kikunojo in Udon was reopened.

2 Shusui

Black blade

Zoro with shusui one piece

  • Current Owner: Ambiguous, resting in Shimatsuki Ryuma's grave
  • Creator: unknown

The Shyusui was the signature sword of Shimatsuki Ryoumu, a legendary samurai known as the “Sword God” who was the ancestor of Roronoa Zoro, who bore a resemblance to his descendant. In particular, Ryūma transformed the sword into a Black Blade, permanently imbued with Ryūma's Haki Aromament, greatly increasing its durability. Ryūma was buried with his sword, but it was confiscated along with his corpse when Gekko Moriya robbed the grave.

It later appeared next to its owner's animated body in Thriller Bark. Zoro fought his zombified ancestor, who ended up gifting the blade to Zoro himself. Zoro believed that his other blades would shatter against him if the duel continued. Zoro became particularly good at the blade when he was taught by Dracul Mihawk, who himself was the owner of Yor, another Black Blade.

These Devil Fruits hinder their users more than any possible flaws they themselves might have.

Shusui is particularly closely associated with the Wano country. Zor's weapons were repeatedly stolen, or he was otherwise asked to return them by the people of the country. Animaru stole the blade from Zoro and returned it to Ryuma's grave. He is valued so highly that Hiyori traded Enmu, her own blade that used to belong to her father, with Zoro to secure Syusui's place in the country.

1 The other sixteen blades are of the great class

It is currently unclear

One Piece Empty Throne Twenty Swords

The status of these Meito, as well as whether or not they will affect the story at all, remains to be seen. Unlike the five currently known Great Rank Blades, there is at least a possibility that another Meito of this class came from outside the country of Wano. That being said, this, along with all other details, are purely speculation at this point. What is worth noting is that there are a number of identified Meites of unclear grade, meaning that there is a possibility that other existing Great Rank Blades may have been seen but not currently identified as such.
