I wonder how a raging narcissist will help me in my quest…
Add to that the rather unique aiming rules the games use in combat, and you've got a whole extra level to contend with. A lot of weapons can also manipulate targeting rules, so it can all be a bit much. We'll explain it all and introduce you to some of the unique ways certain weapons work.
All types of weapons and what jobs can equip them
Although weapons often break the rules, there is a general way to organize them. Weapons are limited to some jobs so everyone won't be able to equip everyone. For the vast majority of weapons, they work the same regardless of who equipped them. A warrior with a sword will hit the enemy just like a Hero.
Here's a quick breakdown of each weapon category and, in general, which jobs can be equipped.
Weapons |

---|---|
Adhesives |
Wizard, Priest and Sage as weapons. Any as a subject. |

Daggers |

Variable. Most jobs can use standard swords, while more complex swords are restricted to hero and warrior. |

In general, there is about nine approximate categories of weapons. Some weapons do not fit into the broader category, such as the Morning Star, so they have been excluded. This is a general group with many exceptions.
Keep in mind, your bag of items in the game is limitless, so you can just take all your weapons with you. Just make sure you really have a good weapon for each member of your party before you head into a new, challenging area.
Weapons with unique effects
Weapons that can be used as items
The more unique aspects of Dragon Quest 3's combat brilliance is that each weapon feels unique, even within its own categories. While some other weapons also have it, such as the Orochi Sword, in most weapons that can be used as items are the Rates.
Each staff you purchase will have a description that mentions the power it has when used as an item. To use this power, you it must be in the character's personal inventory so they can activate it as an item in battle. They are it does not need to be equipped as a weaponmeaning that even non-magic users can take advantage of this power.
The special effect of Staus can also be activated by characters whose spells have been sealedmaking them a great backup option.
Mages can equip staves to increase their physical attack powerthough it does not automatically activate the weapon's special ability. It still needs to be used from inventory. The same goes for a non-club weapon with an effect like Orochi's sword.
Weapons with specific effects for the enemy
Certain weapons too powerful when used against certain enemies. This weapon is quite rare, but can be incredibly useful in certain situations. A weapon's attack value is only a fraction of your attack power, and your Strength stat does some of the heavy lifting. Try not to sell this unique weapon because the damage boost it offers may come in handy.
This weapon is like Zombiesbane sworddeal extra damage to the described enemy. It is always useful to have them on hand.
Weapons with unique aiming rules
In Dragon Quest 3, you can't choose the exact enemy you want to hit most of the time. If multiple enemies are grouped together, you can target the entire group, but not the enemy within it. The same goes for you, where enemies can only target one character at a time unless they use a group attack.
However, there are a few ways around this. Spells like crack and hiss target every enemy in a group and Bang hits all enemies in an encounter, not just those in a specific group. There are certain weapons that allow you to mimic this as well.
A weapon with a unique effect when used as an item usually targets an entire party. Whips, meanwhile, will hit every enemy in the group. Boomerangs are some of the most powerful of all. They will attack each enemy in the encounter as does the Bang spell.
Boomerang always hits from left to rightand deals decreasing damage to each subsequent enemy it hits. Keep this in mind when planning your targeting.
Given the versatility of this weapon, you'll always want to have it close at hand. Don't forget to keep collecting mini-medals if you want get a clipped boomerang earlier on!
