Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has compared his election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, to a designer “garbage bag” in the latest example of America's classy, moderate political rhetoric.
Nevertheless. Designer. It could be worse, right?
Trump, who married the former president's son Eric, became co-chair of the Republican National Committee in March. She said her “number one goal” in the job is to re-elect her father-in-law as president.
Speaking to Fox News on Monday evening US time, Ms Trump suggested that Ms Harris was the political equivalent of an overpriced shopping item.
“It reminds me – there was a bag designed by a very famous designer. That was a few years ago,” said Trump.
“And it was literally a garbage bag. But they sold the thing for about $2,000 thinking people would actually buy it.
“Similar situation with Kamala Harris. A few months ago, no one was interested in Kamala Harris.”
I believe the bag in question, a Balenciaga product, can be ordered here if you are so inclined. It costs 2975 dollars. I will continue to buy bin bags from Woolies (journalism doesn't make Balenciaga money now).
Host Sean Hannity chimed in, saying Ms. Harris had “the most radical record of anyone who has ever run for president.”
“I would argue that after 98 days, it's the job of the Republican Party and the Trump campaign to make sure that every American knows this record, backwards and forwards,” he said.
“Sean, you're absolutely right,” Ms. Trump said.
“Because look, I think we've seen the mainstream media very clearly, and the people there are not going to do it for us.
“Basically, they are trying to rewrite history. It was incredible to see how they tried to support Kamala Harris and really sell her as some kind of weird political figure.
“She was recognized as the most liberal, most radical member of the United States Senate. We need to speak loud and clear about this to the American people.”
In the US, “liberal” means leftist. Since becoming the Democratic nominee, Ms. Harris has moved to back away from some of the more progressive policy positions she championed when she unsuccessfully sought her party's 2020 nomination.
“Nothing Will Prepare You”
Mrs. Trump was among several members of Mr. Trump's family who spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee earlier this month.
In her speech, Mr. Trump's daughter-in-law talked about the attempt on his life. An assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania damaged Mr. Trump's ear. One of the members of the crowd was killed.
“Our family has faced its fair share of death threats,” Ms. Trump said.
“None of this prepares you as a daughter-in-law to watch in real time someone trying to kill someone you love.
“None of this prepares you as a mother to quickly grab the remote control and turn your young children away from the screen so they don't witness something that will haunt their grandfather's memory for the rest of their lives.”
At one point, she addressed Mr. Trump directly. The former president was sitting in the crowd at that time.
“Thank you for your perseverance. Thanks for continuing. Thank you for raising wonderful children. Thank you for being a wonderful grandfather,” said Mrs. Trump.
“Thank you for never giving up on me and thank you for never giving up on our country.”
In a speech, Mrs Trump's husband Eric, who is an executive vice president at his father's campaign, the Trump Organization, said his father had been “persecuted” by “far-left Democrats, special interest groups and handpicked judges”.
“I am honored to be your son,” Eric told his father.
“You are a real leader. You embody strength. Our country loves you, our country appreciates you, our country misses you, and on November 5, our country will re-elect you.”
