A few days before The Game Awards, Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford started hyping up a new one Borderlands 4 a trailer that would be huge and feature gameplay, ultimately confirming that TGA was where it would be shown. One of the key parts of Art Borderlands 4 trailer reveals what appears to be the game's new big bad in the form of The Timekeeper, an entity previously mentioned in Borderlands 3. While the general gameplay footage in the trailer excited some fans, one of the most anticipated parts of the trailer was the reveal of the new Vault Hunters.
Borderlands 4The Vault Hunters faced some backlash soon after the new trailer was released for being too “bland” in terms of design and appearance, perhaps exacerbated by the fact that they can all seem like normal people. Very little is known about the characters, with basic details such as their abilities, specializations, and even their names being kept in the dark. It's likely that more will be revealed in the special Vault Hunter trailer in the future, but for now there are some hints that could affect the roles and archetypes of these characters in the franchise.

Why Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters Can Already Have Defined Roles
Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters – Assassin Archetype
Starting from left to right, the first Vault Hunter appears to be wearing very little armor, suggesting that he may be a more agile fighter. It fits perfectly into the Assassin archetype like Zer0. This theory seems to be supported by the fact that they are shown using what appear to be energy blades and a visor, possibly attached to some sort of exoskeleton. With abilities that can be centered around aerial dodges and hand-to-hand combat, it seems entirely plausible that this character will play as Borderlands 2's Zer0 is bigger than any other archetype. Another possible similarity with Athena from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelthough that seems more unlikely given her rudimentary approach to combat.
Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters – Siren Archetype
It's not much of a guess as to who the second Vault Hunter on the left might be, as their tattoos reveal that they are Sirens. Given the color of the tattoos, they could be related to the canceled Slug damage type Borderlands 2 that did not pass into Borderlands 3. It makes more sense when Borderlands 4 follows the trend of “elemental tattoos” for Sirena, similar to Amari's Borderlands 3 or Lilith from the first game.
However, this may not be the case, and instead the new Siren's powers are unrelated to the Slug or existing elements in the franchise. However, there is a possibility that Siren's powers have something to do with mobility, as the trailer shows her running slightly faster than the other Vault Hunter. However, this could be something purely for the trailer and not an actual ability Borderlands 4gameplay will include.
Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters – Soldier or Mercenary Archetype
The tall and hulking Vault Hunter, third from the left, clearly has some robotic parts, such as his left arm and possibly even his legs. This is not something new for the franchise, as shown with Wilhelm as the boss Borderlands 2 and then as a cache hunter Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. In-game, this character uses the hook ability, but it remains to be seen if this is an exclusive skill for this Vault Hunter.
More importantly, this character features the transformation of drones into elemental axes that are thrown at enemies, which means that a related class for the Vault Hunter could be a Soldier Archetype, perhaps a Bujan or even a Mercenary. This means they are somewhere on the spectrum between characters like Roland, Brick, and Zane.
Notably, this Vault Hunter can have robotic upgrades to his skills and body, just like Wilhelm did in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters – Gunslinger or Mehramant archetype
Finally, the fourth Vault Hunter from the left is shown the least amount of time in the trailer, and unlike Siren, whose powers and abilities can be guessed based on the approach of the series, it remains a mystery. Based on looks alone, this cache hunter might look like none of them Borderlands 3's Moze or Borderlands 2's Gaige, with the archetypes in question being Gunner and Mehramant.
There's also the option that this Vault Hunter is more gun-oriented in general, like Nisha with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel or El Salvador from Borderlands 2. However, in the trailer, the character is shown using what looks like a jet pack, and their pants have what appear to be fluid tubes. This may be due to The border gameplay elements are possibly Cryo by design, making this Vault Hunter more of an inventor and gadget user than the Gunner or Mechromancer featured in the series thus far.
When to expect new Borderlands 4 news
Overall, it remains to be seen if it will Borderlands 4Vault Hunters will be reinventing the wheel in terms of gameplay, but it seems like they'll all have some familiar elements while still having a defined personal identity. With the game coming out in 2025, it seems logical that a new trailer will arrive soon, perhaps sometime in the first quarter of next year, and the game will be released in the fall – if past releases are anything to go by.
