Black Ops 6 Zombies can't let the Wunderwaffe be Chekhov's gun

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is scheduled for release on October 25, 2024 and will include the highly anticipated Zombies Liberty Falls map. This map will feature the classic Zombies gameplay set in a small town in West Virginia. While the Ray Gun and Jet Gun are confirmed to be available in the mystery box, the absence of one of the primary weapons in the initial gameplay for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 became a hot topic among fans.

The weapon in question is the Wunderwaffe, and since it was featured in the Liberty Falls trailer, players are still hoping that it will make an appearance in the gameplay in some way, although it's unclear how. However, it's also possible that he won't appear at all, and the franchise could consider this trailer an easter egg, as has sometimes happened before.

Why the Wunderwaffe should be in Call of Duty Black Ops 6

With the Ray Gun and Jet Gun already in the Mystery Box in Liberty Falls, the absence of the Wunderwaffe in Call of Duty seems like an odd omission, especially after the demo. However, if it's not on the map at all, it can potentially be saved for future maps or updates, though it's not as satisfying for players hoping to get it now.

Also, it would be disappointing not to have it in the game, especially if the franchise is selling one in relation to Black Ops 6 with camouflage Call of Duty MWZ. It also reinforces the idea that it won't take much effort to move it. Selling the camo and teasing it in the trailer without making the weapon available might seem like a huge missed opportunity for the franchise from both a fan service and marketing perspective.

Call of Duty has previously teased weapons that were never produced

Cinematic intro for Origins (from Black Ops II) briefly shows Olympia's gun during a cutscene. However, despite this teaser, it is not an available weapon in the actual game. This is after the Olympia was a common starting weapon in the past Call of Duty Zombies maps (like Kino der Toten and Nacht der Untoten), but they weren't in Origins.

Similarly, in Mob of the Dead (also from Black Ops 2), the Python Revolver is seen in the opening cinematic when the main characters use it. However, like Olympia in Origins, Python is also missing from the gameplay.

Wunderwaffe can be enabled through easter eggs

Having the Wunderwaffe be part of an easter egg quest where players could go down to where Richtofen was in the intro after completing the main quest to get it could be a nostalgic and satisfying throwback. This concept goes well with tradition Call of Duty Zombies Easter Eggs where players complete challenging steps to unlock secret locations or weapons.

Edward Richtofen throwing away the Wunderwaffe and locking it away only to be brought back via a post-easter egg event also fits perfectly with the zombie lore and narrative Black operations fans will be grateful too. The idea also echoes the Call of the Dead easter egg where the Wunderwaffe was unlocked as a reward. However, this should be taken with a grain of salt, as the needles so far only point to the fact that Wunderwaffe may never reach final gameplay. Especially since the franchise has previously tended to treat single trailer appearances as Chekhovian guns that never fire.

Chekhov's gun is a principle of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, who famously said: if in the first act you hang a gun on the wall, then in the next you need to shoot it. Otherwise, don't put it there.
