Fortnite has its fair share of events, from climactic end-of-season finales that open a new chapter to smaller mini-events that tease upcoming seasons. Each of these events is always a spectacle, but some of the most anticipated are Fortnite’s annual events, which fans often look forward to even before they’re announced.

When players think of annual Fortnite events, Winterfest may come to mind, bringing Christmas festivities to the world of Fortnite. While Winterfest is undoubtedly popular, Fortnitemares is also highly rated, with each version delivering spooky content to celebrate Halloween. Here’s a ranking of every Fortnitemares event in Fortnite!
8 Fortnitemares 2022
Featuring A Fun Mythic, NPC Bossfight, But A Small Amount Of Content
- Release Date: October 18, 2022
- Season Debut: Chapter 3, Season 4
Fortnitemares 2022 is often regarded as one of the weakest renditions of Fortnitemares. This event debuted during Fortnite Paradise, bringing a sizable content drop in the form of the Howler Claws Mythic item. The Howler Claws were a fun addition to Battle Royale, providing players with powerful abilities such as lunging forward, performing powerful slash attacks, and revealing nearby players. This event also introduced a fun NPC boss, allowing players to get their hands on the Pumpkin Launcher and a Mythic Suppressed SMG, providing fans with a fun challenge and bountiful rewards. Another standout feature of this event was the debut of exciting crossover outfits for the Item Shop, including the infamous Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise.
Fortnitemares 2022 also brought the Grim Gables location to the Chapter 3 map, along with some exciting chrome-themed cosmetics like the Chrome Cage Back Bling, Everything’s End Glider, and the Unmaker Pickaxe. It also saw the return of the Horde Rush LTM, this time allowing players to play it on Zero Build without overshield. However, that was about all the content available for Fortnitemares 2022, making it one of Fortnite’s smallest and least exciting Halloween events. While players still found some enjoyment in the mode and its Halloween cosmetics, it did not necessarily compare to other, more content-rich events in the game.
7 Fortnitemares 2023
Featured a Great Boss Fight, Exciting Mythics, But Little Content
- Release Date: October 10, 2023
- Season Debut: Chapter 4, Season 4
Fortnitemares 2023 followed a similar format to the previous year’s Halloween event, this time focusing most of its content on Battle Royale with a boss fight with Kado Thorne at Eclipsed Estate. Players who headed to this location could challenge Kado Thorne in his Revenant form, granting them access to Thorne’s Vampiric Blade and the Mythic Wood Stake Shotgun. Both were strong additions alongside the debut of the regular Wood Stake Shotgun, offering devastating firepower for those lucky enough to claim these rewards. Other notable returns included the Pumpkin Launcher and Witch Broom — staples of Fortnitemares — as well as ghosts that appeared on the island to guide players to Buried Treasure.
Much like last year, Horde Rush returned with quests that players could complete to earn cosmetic rewards like the Batwing Bonespike Pickaxe and the Murk Wrap. Battle Royale also received its own quests, rewarding players with items like the Bat Royale Back Bling, the Phantasmic Fall Contrail, and the Revenant Rider Glider. Aside from a cool Fortnite Crew Outfit and collaboration skins like Michael Myers, Jack Skellington, and Alan Wake, that was all Fortnitemares 2023 had to offer, making it pale in comparison to some of the later Fortnitemares events.
6 Fortnitemares: Midas’ Revenge
Featuring The Return Of Midas, Exciting New Items, & Unique Mechanics
- Release Date: October 21, 2020
- Season Debut: Chapter 2, Season 4
Fortnitemares: Midas’ Revenge was definitely one of the more unique renditions of the Halloween event, centering around the return of Midas to Battle Royale, this time in his Shadow Midas form at The Ruins. Players lucky enough to take down Shadow Midas could wield his Mythic Drum Gun. Although it functioned almost identically to the Mythic Drum Gun before it, it still provided a fun challenge. Speaking of loot additions, Fortnitemares: Midas’ Revenge saw the debut of the first iteration of the Witch Broom, a fun mobility item that players could use to zip around the map. As with other Fortnitemares events, 2020’s version also featured Candy, the Pumpkin Launcher, and the return of the somewhat forgettable Fiend Hunter Crossbow.
Beyond loot, the biggest change in Fortnitemares: Midas’ Revenge was the introduction of a second chance for eliminated players. Upon elimination, players would return to the island as Shadows, tasked with eliminating the remaining living players to achieve a Nitemare Royale. This mechanic closely resembled Call of Duty: Warzone’s Zombie Royale mode, providing a refreshing twist on the usual Battle Royale formula. Like other events, Midas’ Revenge offered free cosmetics through quests, including the Smash O’Lantern Pickaxe, the Midas’ Shadow Wrap, and the Bobo Back Bling. While these cosmetics weren’t the most outstanding, they were solid additions nonetheless. Save the World fans also received some exciting content, with the return of the Hexsylvania Venture Zone and the debut of brand-new Dungeons for Fortnitemares 2020.
5 Fortnitemares: Wrath of the Cube Queen
Featuring a Fun LTM, Unique Loot, & Great Cosmetic Rewards
- Release Date: October 5, 2021
- Season Debut: Chapter 2, Season 8
Fortnitemares: Wrath of the Cube Queen was undoubtedly the highlight of Chapter 2, Season 8, bringing a huge amount of content to the season. This Fortnitemares event introduced Cube Town, a unique POI right in the center of the map, featuring Boost Pads and sections where players could bounce around in style. Cube Town quickly became a hot drop for the season, with players landing there early to increase their chances of acquiring the Witch Broom and Pumpkin Launcher, both of which returned for Fortnitemares: Wrath of the Cube Queen — along with Candy consumables. In addition to returning Halloween items, Fortnitemares: Wrath of the Cube Queen also introduced the Sideways Scythe, a devastating melee weapon that players could acquire in Sideways Zones or by defeating Caretakers, a hostile NPC that brought exciting boss fights to Battle Royale.

Speaking of Caretakers and Cube Monsters, Fortnitemares: Wrath of the Cube Queen also marked the debut of Horde Rush, a PvE mode in which players fend off waves of Cube Monsters. The mode included unique quests that rewarded free cosmetic items, including the Thinking Juice Back Bling. Battle Royale also had its own Fortnitemares Quests, offering rewards like the Cube Cruiser Glider, the Wrathful Breakout Contrail, and the All-Weather Extractor Pickaxe. These exciting content drops, combined with stellar Halloween cosmetics like Skeletara, made 2021’s Fortnitemares an event to remember. But that’s not all — Save the World also received a new Dungeon called the Lab, a trend that didn’t carry over to later Fortnitemares events.
4 Fortnitemares 2017
Featuring The Pumpkin Launcher, Iconic Skins, & Staple Fortnitemares Features
- Release Date: October 26, 2017
- Season Debut: Chapter 1, Season 1
Fortnitemares 2017 was the event that started it all, marking Fortnite’s very first Halloween celebration. Most of the content in Fortnitemares 2017 was tailored towards Save the World, bringing players of the once-popular PvE mode a fresh stream of spooky-themed content to enjoy. The biggest highlight was Hexsylvania, a brand-new Venture Zone offering 20 Story Quests to dive into. In addition to the new Venture Zone and missions, players could also battle Halloween-themed Husks and unlock Halloween-themed Heroes to celebrate the season.
While Battle Royale received very little content — arguably the least of any Fortnitemares event — players can thank Fortnitemares 2017 for the debut of the Pumpkin Launcher, which has returned annually ever since. The Fortnite Battle Royale island also received a Halloween makeover, ramping up the creepiness as players fought to be the last one standing. Fortnitemares 2017 also introduced the Fortnite Item Shop, which brought with it iconic OG skins like the Ghoul Trooper Outfit and paved the way for more exciting cosmetics. All in all, Fortnitemares 2017 was the starting point for many of the features that are still beloved in Fortnite today, which is why fans remember it so fondly.
3 Fortnitemares 2018
Featuring PvE, New Locations, & A Large Focus On Battle Royale
- Release Date: October 24, 2018
- Season Debut: Chapter 1, Season 6
Fortnitemares 2018 was the second edition of the popular Halloween event, debuting during Season 6 — one of the best seasons of Fortnite. Unlike the previous event, 2018’s Fortnitemares had a bigger focus on Battle Royale, centering around The Cube, the main antagonist for the season. Fortnitemares 2018 introduced a new twist with the first major crossover from PvP to PvPvE combat, featuring Cube Fiends that continuously spawned across the island. This shift added chaos to the Battle Royale mode, creating both fun and occasionally frustrating moments. Additionally, the floating island of Loot Lake was shattered into pieces, creating a nice change to the center of the map.
Aside from the Cube Fiends and map changes, Fortnitemares 2018 also brought notable additions to the loot pool, including the Six Shooter and the debut of the Fiend Hunter Crossbow, along with the return of the Pumpkin Launcher. Battle Royale players could also earn some creative free cosmetic rewards by completing quests, such as the Dark Engine Glider and the Virulent Flames Contrail. While the first reactive skin hit the Item Shop during this event, much of the rest of Fortnitemares 2018 content was geared towards Save the World, including the return of the Hexsylvania Venture Zone, along with new Heroes and the Rat Rod Weapon Set. These additions were a welcome change, especially as new content for Save the World would later become less frequent.
2 Fortnitemares 2019
Featuring Unique Map Changes, Jumpscares, & Unique LTMS
- Release Date: Chapter 2, Season 1
- Season Debut: October 29, 2019
Fortnitemares 2019 took several creative liberties from the previous year’s event, diving fully into Battle Royale content. This update introduced a spooky-themed map, with the main attraction being the Isle of the Storm, a POI located at the center of the map. Here, players could take on Cube Fiends, use creative mobility items, and soar across the map via Ghost Vents. Exploring the island also offered some scares, as Zombies would often disguise themselves as regular props, springing to life to jumpscare unsuspecting players. Aside from the map changes, loot saw a small overhaul with the expected return of the Pumpkin Launcher. While these changes may seem minor for regular Battle Royale, additional content emerged in the form of a new LTM.
Fortnitemares 2019 marked the debut of one of the more unique and unexpected LTMs, the Storm King LTM. In this mode, players had to work together to take down the Storm King boss at the Isle of the Storm, leading to an epic and chaotic boss fight. Although some criticized the mode since the Storm King was previously a Save The World boss, many Battle Royale-only players welcomed the addition. The Storm King LTM also offered its own unique rewards, including the Storm Sail Glider. On top of this, players could dive into a community-created mode called Gun Fright, while also unlocking unique skins from the Item Shop, like Jawbreaker and Blacklight. All these additions gave players plenty of ways to enjoy Fortnite, making Fortnitemares 2019 one of the best Halloween events yet.
1 Fortnitemares 2024
Featuring Map Changes, Exciting Boss Fights, Collabs, & More
- Release Date: October 12, 2024
- Season Debut: Chapter 5, Season 4
Fortnitemares Chapter 5 Season 4 was arguably one of the biggest events players have seen yet. While initially delayed by an extra day after its intended release, Chapter 5’s big Halloween event brought a plethora of content for fans to dive into. As players might have expected, Fortnitemares Chapter 5 Season 4 followed the trend of previous events, giving the map a spooky makeover while also adding a new POI: Freaky Fields. This Fortnitemares event also saw the debut of new NPC bosses, such as Billy the Puppet, which ramped up the creepy factor, and the Ultima Carver, which granted players access to nostalgic Mythics like the Pumpkin Launcher and the Wood Stake Shotgun. Of course, each boss also showed up as skins that players could purchase from the Item Shop — another strong point of the event since the Halloween skins that debuted were fantastic.
The loot pool in Fortnitemares Chapter 5 Season 4 inspired some of the most chaotic yet fun matches of Fortnite, blending additional mobility items like the Chainsaw and the return of the Witch Broom with the already-existing Shuri’s Black Panther Claws and Iron Man’s Flight Kit. These additions allowed players to zip around the island as quickly as they pleased. Other fun and unique additions included the Boom Billy throwable, perfect for laying traps on the battlefield. Unlike some previous Fortnitemares events, these additions didn’t overshadow other weapons in the game, keeping the season’s identity intact while spicing things up. This Fortnitemares also introduced one the biggest rosters of free rewards of other Halloween events before it, providing players quite a bit to grind for. To add even more content, this Fortnitemares event was also the first to debut after the inclusion of LEGO Fortnite, offering players the Brick or Treat Pass to add Halloween-themed build pieces to their LEGO world.
