Deltarune: 7 Most Popular Fan Theories
Deltarune is ripe with fan theories surrounding themes, characters, plots, and more, so here are some of the most popular of them, explained.
Fans of these games had already fallen in love with the legendary cast from Undertale, but Deltarune is on a whole new level: it’s bigger, better, funnier, and even more memorable. There are a lot of great characters that players can meet across the game’s four chapters, but the following eight are the best ones in the entire adventure, so far.

Rouxls Kaard
The Self-Proclaimed “Duke Of Puzzles” Is A Hilarious Comic Relief
- First Appearance: Chapter 1: Beginning (October 31, 2018)
At the very end of Chapter 1, Kris, Susie, and Ralsei meet an absurd enemy called Rouxls Kaard, who calls himself the “Duke of Puzzles” even though all of his puzzles are extremely easy to solve. On top of that (and much to the surprise of the player,) he also takes care of the shop inside the King’s castle. Needless to say, due to his egotistical but entertaining personality, extravagant design, and almost incomprehensible accent, Rouxls Kaard quickly became one of the most memorable characters of the first chapter.
Fortunately for his fans, he would go on to appear in Chapters 2 and 3, trying to confront the “Fun Gang” with some sort of ridiculous or bizarre puzzle/challenge. His appearance in Chapter 3: Late Night, in which he gets involved in Tenna’s TV show and ends up forming a reluctant throuple with Lanino and Elnina, was absolutely hilarious and one of the biggest highlights of the entire chapter. Sadly, Rouxls Kaard was nowhere to be seen in Chapter 4, but he will most likely pop up in future chapters.

The Old Man (Gerson Boom)
A Feeble Old Shopkeeper Who Actually Knows A Lot More Than It May Seem
- First Appearance: Chapter 4: Prophecy (June 5, 2025)
The early chapters of Deltarune repeatedly hinted at the existence of an old historian and writer from the Hometown named Gerson Boom (after the Undertale character) who apparently knew something about the Dark World. After years of theorizing and speculation, fans finally got to meet him in Chapter 4: Prophecy, under the pseudonym of “Old Man”.
At first, he comes off as a feeble and innocent old man who walks extremely slowly and acts as a shopkeeper in the Dark World, but the “Fun Gang” slowly finds out that he knows a lot more than it may initially seem, especially Susie, who’s actually able to master her healing magic thanks to his guidance. Much to their (and the player’s) surprise, the Old Man is also quite a proficient fighter, and he plays an important role in the final fight against the Darkness Titan. Even though his long-awaited appearance gave players some answers, it also left them with even more questions, so fans are hoping that he’ll reappear in Chapters 5 and beyond.
6
Noelle Holiday
A Sweet Girl That Learned How To Stand Up For Herself
- First Appearance: Chapter 1: Beginning (October 31, 2018)
Back when Chapter 1 was released, it seemed like Kris and Susie’s classmates were just going to be random background characters, but fortunately, some of them ended up playing key roles in the plot of Chapter 2. One of them was none other than Noelle Holiday, the sweet and smart (but shy) deer girl who worked on the school project with Berdly and had an obvious crush on Susie. When she accidentally ended up in a digital section of the Dark World called Cyber World, she was suddenly kidnapped by Queen, who wanted to turn her into her robot-faced minion and use the Dark Fountain to create a new world alongside her.

Players will cross paths with several challenging foes in Undertale. These characters are the most difficult of the bunch.
Throughout this chapter, Noelle not only learns to stand up to the villainess and say what she actually thinks (which is an obvious parallel to her relationship with her strict mother in the Light World), but she also forms a very endearing close bond with Susie, in what is arguably the beginning of one of the best romantic stories in both Undertale and Deltarune. Noelle also appears prominently at the very beginning of Chapter 4, where players finally get a closer look at her complicated relationship with her mother, Carol. Due to her lovable personality, her relationship with Susie, and her obvious importance to the main plot, she will most likely play an even bigger role in future chapters.

Queen (Serial Number Q5U4EX7YY2E9N)
The Ruler Of Cyber World Is A Crazy But Extremely Entertaining Living Computer
- First Appearance: Chapter 2: A Cyber’s World (September 17, 2021)
The main antagonist of Chapter 2 is Queen, who, like all other Darkners, is actually a state-of-the-art laptop in the Light World. As a result of her unique condition, her design, personality, and fighting style perfectly embody prominent aspects of computers, technology, robots, and even the internet. Due to all of these different elements, she’s quite a chaotic but charming character, a breath of fresh air for all the fans who were worried that she was just going to be a female version of King.
Queen is absolutely hilarious, and she’s single-handedly responsible for some of the funniest moments in the entire game, like the segment in which she repeatedly escapes from her newest minion, Berdly, just because she finds him annoying and even makes a temporary truce with Kris (her enemy) just to avoid him. Furthermore, her two boss fights are also incredibly creative and entertaining, especially the second one, in which players get to fight GIGA Queen one-on-one in a hectic but epic boxing game similar to Punch-Out. It’s no surprise that Queen became a major fan favorite after the release of her chapter.
4
Mr. Ant Tenna
One Of The Weirdest (But Most Delightful) Characters Toby Fox Has Created
- First Appearance: Chapter 3: Late Night (June 5, 2025)
Deltarune’s third chapter mainly takes place in a TV world, and its main star (and antagonist) is none other than Mr. Ant Tenna, a wacky character who immediately stands out due to being the only person in the game to be made with pre-rendered 3D graphics, transformed into a 2D sprite. Combine with his eccentric “game show” host persona and his bizarre TV-based powers, and he quickly became the best part of the entire chapter (and one of the most memorable ones in the entire game).
Tenna forces Kris, Susie, and Ralsei to participate in a game show with a collection of boards themed around different TV genres, like video games, cooking, music, cowboys, etc., and he gets his chance to showcase his hilarious personality in every single one of them. But, of course, the player eventually finds out that he’s hiding a dark and tragic secret behind his over-the-top façade: Tenna is Dreemurr’s old television, who’s resentful over the fact that nobody has used him in ages, especially after Asgore left the house and Asriel went to college. This one element added a lot of nuance to his character and made him even more fascinating. Nevertheless, the fact that Toby Fox and his team managed to create another TV host antagonist who looks and feels nothing like Mettaton from Undertale is quite admirable.
3
Lancer
The Round And Goofy, Unofficial Fourth Member Of The “Fun Gang”
- First Appearance: Chapter 1: Beginning (October 31, 2018)
While Kris, Susie, and Ralsei are obviously the three main characters of the game, each Deltarune chapter also has its own additional protagonist, and Lancer is obviously the star of the very first one. He initially comes off as a silly and annoying antagonist who’s clearly working for a big bad, but as he forms a new friendship with Susie, he slowly becomes more and more likable. By the end of his introductory chapter, Lancer goes from a nuisance to an adorable, hilarious, and brave good guy, especially when he stands up to his father in order to protect his newfound friends.

Undertale is an amazing game that has inspired tons of fan-made versions. Here are some of the best that have been released to the public.
Lancer is childish, goofy, and silly, and his interactions with the “Fun Gang” (especially Susie) are always a joy to watch. He even became an unofficial fourth member of the group, seeing as he went on to live alongside them in Ralsei’s castle, and his assistance was of extreme importance in their adventures in Chapters 2 and 3. Nowadays, Lancer is so iconic that he’s pretty much synonymous with Deltarune, and he has become one of the game’s most recognizable and popular characters.
2
Ralsei
This Kind And Soft Young Prince Knows Way Too Much About The Dark World
- First Appearance: Chapter 1: Beginning (October 31, 2018)
As one of the three protagonists and a member of the “Fun Gang”, Ralsei is obviously one of the most important and relevant characters in all of Deltarune. He first appears in Chapter 1, in which he’s sort of a guide who explains everything about the Dark World and its prophecy to both the Lightners and the player, not to mention that, at the very end, it’s revealed that he looks suspiciously similar to Asriel Dreemurr. Needless to say, due to his crucial role, he went on to appear prominently in all subsequent chapters.
Ralsei is, without a doubt, the most lovable and adorable character in the game, due to his excellent design (which is perfect for plushies) and innocent personality. Furthermore, his new friendship with Kris and Susie is really endearing, and it’s very satisfying to see him grow stronger and more confident thanks to their influence. But, sadly, Ralsei is also fully aware of his “fake” existence as a resident of the Dark World and knows what the mysterious ending of the prophecy is, which made him into quite a tragic figure in the last two chapters. Fans have obviously fallen in love with Ralsei and are hoping that he and his friends will get the happy ending they deserve in the upcoming chapters.
1
Susie
The True Protagonist of Deltarune
- First Appearance: Chapter 1: Beginning (October 31, 2018)
Of course, Kris (and their soul) is the only playable character in Deltarune, but it would be a mistake to say that they’re the game’s protagonist, because that distinction obviously belongs to Susie: she’s the main driving force of the story, she gets the most screen-time, and she gets a lot of development in comparison to her two teammates. She was initially introduced as Kris’s violent and rude school bully, but they eventually formed an unbreakable bond after they both fell into the mysterious Dark World.
Fortunately, the player and her friends slowly get to know Susie better, learn about the trauma that shaped her into who she is, and witness her incredible development, from an abusive school bully to the brave hero of the Dark World’s prophecy. Unlike Kris and Ralsei, she gets a lot of time to shine in every single chapter of the game, with her romantic interactions with Noelle, her mother-son relationship with Toriel, and her newfound admiration for the “Old Man” being some of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of the entire experience. At the end of the day, Susie is one of the best characters that Toby Fox and his team have ever created, and she’ll definitely get even better when the remaining chapters of Deltarune come out in 2026.
