Key Takeaways
- Gothic and alternative fashion styles are prominent in anime characters.
- Each character has a unique style that enhances their personality.
- These characters showcase the darker side of anime fashion with complex storylines.
Anime is full of cute characters who dress in colorful outfits and have bright pastel hair. However, there also are anime characters that sport a darker style, creating a stark contrast against their fellow cutesy companions. In darker anime, such as Death Note or Vampire Knight, it’s more common to find characters that dabble in the darker side of fashion, and with gothic lolita being a popular style in Japan, it’s no wonder that it’s also commonly seen throughout anime.
While certain characters may not necessarily be goth, they definitely fit into the gothic aesthetic, and some are even part of the alternative scene themselves. The characters in Nana are even involved in the punk music scene, making them relatable to those within the alternative sphere in real life, too.

4 Maria Naruse (Testament of Sister New Devil)
Powerful And Stylish Beyond Her Years
- Release Date: January 7, 2015
- Creator: Takao Yoshioka
- Genres: Action, Supernatural
- Studio: Production IMS
As a succubus, Maria is not a character to take lightly, even if her usual small stature makes her look like the least intimidating character in the entire show. But one thing is for certain: Maria Naruse is a goth icon.
She might not be as well known as other anime goths such as Misa Amane, but Maria’s wardrobe speaks for itself. In all of her forms, black is an ever-present color, and she can even sprout wings and horns, which is something most goths wish they were capable of. Her overall aesthetic, and the strength she has from being the daughter of Demon King and succubus make Maria a stand-out character in this anime.
5 Hannah Annafellows (Black Butler)
Stands Out Among The Crowd Due To Her Impeccable Taste
Black Butler
- Release Date
- October 2, 2008
- Studio
- A-1 Pictures, CloverWorks (Public School Arc)
- Japanese Title
- Kuroshitsuji
- Number of Episodes
- 57
Black Butler is a veritable feast for goth anime fans, as the Victorian goth aesthetic is present throughout the show, modeled by the fans and seen in many of the backdrops. While there are debates to be had over the best goth in the series, there is one character that would likely have very few fans fighting in her corner, which would be doing her an injustice: Hannah Annafellows.
Hannah is a devoted maid to the Tracy household and is normally garbed in custom, traditional maid outfits that have heavily influenced Lolita fashion. Even when she is not in uniform, Hannah is seen decked out in other iconic gothic outfits, marking her as one of the most fashionable characters in the anime, which is a tough feat to pull off in Black Butler.

Vampires are a timeless trope in any media, but in anime, the following shows take the cake as the best vampire anime series.

- Release Date
- March 7, 1992
- Creator
- Naoko Takeuchi

Her flowing dark navy locks and her dark green and purple ensemble are as goth as it gets in a show like Sailor Moon. Queen Nehelenia’s villainous ways and her quest for eternal youth only serve to make her all the more gothic.
10 Dracula (Castlevania)
A Figure From Classic Gothic Literature
Castlevania
- Release Date
- July 7, 2017
- Creator
- Warren Ellis
- Number of Episodes
- 32
Another vampire, but this time one that is full-blooded. Dracula has come far from the pages of a classic horror story published back in the late 1800s, becoming the main antagonist of Konami’s Castlevania game series and the subsequent anime. His villainous origins are rooted in understandable circumstances, as his healer wife is accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake, leading Dracula to swear bloody vengeance upon the land.
His aristocratic features and garb make him look like a Victorian goth, as that sub-style of the genre mimics looking like nobility from the 1900s with cravat ties, capes, and plenty of classic black suits, all of which Dracula wears. Also, his dark and brooding castle helps to solidify his status as one of the most gothic characters to emerge from anime.

Dresses In Gothic Lolita And Is Friends With A Serial Killer
Karin
- Release Date
- November 3, 2005
- Creator

In this anime all about vampires and romance, Karin Maaka is something of a reverse vampire, suffering from a condition that causes her to create a surplus of blood she must inject into another, or she will have an explosive bloody nose that renders her unconscious. The clutzy, scatterbrained Karin is the antithesis of her younger sister, Anju.
Despite her young age, Anju is very mature, calm, and collected and is always seen sporting gothic lolita clothes and carrying around her creepy doll, Boogie. What makes this doll even more terrifying is that it is said to be possessed by the spirit of a serial killer, a terrifying fact that doesn’t bother the gloomy and gothic Anju. Despite her cold exterior, she still cares deeply for her family, especially her older sister.

This is an online community for girls who like anime and participate in otaku culture. Ruri isn’t too fond of Kirino and Kyousuke at first, but that’s mainly because of her shy personality.
