An explanation of Lemillion's unique fighting style

Key conclusions

  • Lemillion's fighting style is unique due to his cunning, physical strength, and foresight.
  • Penetration allows Lemillion to phase through anything, with drawbacks that make him difficult to control.
  • Lemilion's disciplined martial arts training and ability to anticipate his opponent's movements enhance his fighting style.

U My Hero Academyhow someone engages in a fight – their fighting style, so to speak – is largely determined by their quirks. Those who can cause mass destruction with a single attack, such as All Might or All-For-One, can ignore everything and smash their enemies to pieces. On the other hand, those with quirky powers—Gumhead and Spot come to mind—need to come up with a unique fighting style that can take full advantage of their special feature.

Lemillion belongs to the second camp. Similar to Eraserhead and Blot, he also has a nasty quirk that usually prevents him from becoming a hero. In fact, his father, who has the same trait as him, rarely uses it in his day-to-day life because of how difficult it is to control. That being said, Lemillion isn't one to give up on his dream of being a hero so easily. So he trains hard and is finally able to develop his own unique way of fighting. Let's take this opportunity to dive into what makes Lemillion's fighting style so unique.

Before we get into the fighting style, let's first talk about the building blocks of Lemillion's fighting style. Three main components contribute to his fighting style. His quirkiness, his physical strength and his foresight. Let's start with his quirk, Penetration.

Step by step through everything

As the name suggests, Permeation allows Lemillion to step through everything. He can freely turn his body or parts of his body into intangibles and slip through anything. Even though it is intangible, no attacks can touch it, and no defense can stop it. This feature is especially useful for infiltration missions. After all, it doesn't matter if the enemy is hiding underground or behind layers of thick slabs of iron walls, Lemillion can just walk into their lair without breaking a sweat.

“Mirio, make one wrong move with our quirk and you could be split in two. It's hard to control, so Dad refused to be a hero. But you're still going to do it?”

— Mirio Tagata's father, Chapter 152

A lot more trouble than you think

Reading the description above, Permeation seems like such a handy quirk, right? Well, that couldn't be further from the truth. This quirk requires an absurd amount of concentration from the user. In order to determine exactly which part of his body should become intangible, Lemillion must have complete control and awareness of every inch of his body.

Also, while it is in full immaterial mode, everything will pass through it, including light and oxygen. This means that when he dives underground, he cannot see or breathe. By the way, so that he does not slip through his clothes, his character's suit is made of a special fiber, which is developed on the basis of strands of his hair.

Physical strength

Penetration is not a feature that grants users enhanced physical abilities. It might help Lemillion move like no other, but that's pretty much it. So, in order to take down the villains and become a true, honest hero, Lemillion must train his body the old fashioned way. This means gaining muscle mass and learning martial arts.

Raw muscle power

Mirio Tagata during the fight

Since all weapons and tools will slip through him, Lemillion's only weapon is his body. Or rather, his kicks and punches. He realized this fact early on, so building muscle has always been a part of his daily training regimen. But that doesn't mean he suddenly bulked up like All Might. Lemillion's fighting style requires speed and agility, meaning that despite being muscular, he is still relatively slim. This is why his physique may not be very different from ordinary people. Nowadays, he can easily knock people down with a single kick or punch.

Martial arts

Mirio lost his powers while protecting Eri from being overhauled

All the muscle in the world won't mean anything if he can't punch properly. That's why, apart from building muscle and controlling quirks, he also has martial arts training as part of his daily routine. He doesn't need to be an expert in every martial art under the sun. Boxing for his punches and karate or taekwondo for his kicks should be enough. Maybe grappling or Muay Thai to tie it all together. So yeah, Lemillion has mastered the basics of mixed martial arts and that's pretty much all he needs to take down any baddies.

Episode 63

Lemillion is an apprentice of Sir Night's Eye, a man who has worked alongside All Might for many years. The Night's Eye Quirk allows him to peer into his target's future, perfectly seeing what they will be doing in the next seconds, minutes, hours, or even years into the future. Due to this, no one can touch the Night Eye in battle. Meanwhile, he can easily land a critical hit to knock down his enemy. Lemillion doesn't have the Night's Eye quirk, but the master made sure his apprentice had this ability of foresight instilled in him.

Taking everything in

The first thing Lemillion does in battle is observe everything around him so he can take advantage of his surroundings. It's better if he has information about his enemy in advance, like during Shi Hasaika's raid. But even if he knows nothing about them, Lemillion is trained to always analyze the quirks, movements, and personalities of his opponents so that he can predict their next moves as accurately as possible. By accepting all of these, he will exponentially increase his chances of winning the fight.

Predict everything

When Lemillion uses his Penetration to sink into the ground, he will be repelled because two different masses cannot occupy the same space. Lemillion uses this phenomenon to move in any direction he wants, allowing him to move faster than his opponents can react.

But no matter how fast he moves, if the enemy sees him approaching, he will be able to prepare a counterattack or make an evasive maneuver. That's when predicting your opponents' moves comes into play. By anticipating where the enemy will be and what they will do next, Lemillion can catch his opponents off guard and deliver a critical strike. He already has quirk, strength and martial arts, but foresight takes his fighting style to a new level.

“I keep a close eye on my enemy! And try to predict his next move! But you move a lot better than some two-bit Yakuza thug! You are strong, Chisaki! Still, between the two of us, I'm stronger!!”

So, now that we have all the pieces of the puzzle, namely Traits, Muscle Power, Martial Arts, and Foresight, let's see how Lemillion uses all of these tools in action. There's no better way to showcase his unique fighting style than when he fought against Kai Chisaki, better known as Overhaul, and his thugs in the Shi Hasaikai arc.

Moving in front of the enemy

This fight takes place in a long corridor beneath Shi Hasaikai's headquarters. Chisaki intends to escape from the secret passage along with Eri and some of his subordinates. The moment Overhaul and his goons realize that Lemillion has caught up to them, they immediately attempt to attack him head-on. But before they could move, Lemillion had already dived underground, climbed up to the Overhaul, and appeared right behind the masked villain. All these maneuvers happen in a fraction of a second. Before Overhaul can react, Lemillion has already landed a clean kick that knocks the Yakuza down.

Catapult near the ground

Diving into the ground and nearby walls and then using the knockback effect to catapult in the chosen direction is Lemilion's signature move. Not only is it effective as a surprise attack, it's also Lemillion's fastest move. In fact, one of his ultimate moves is called Phantom Menace. When he performs this move, Lemillion bounces off nearby walls, floors, and ceilings at high speed, then destroys multiple enemies at once. Lemillion uses Phantom Menace to take down several Overhaul minions before they have a chance to react. This step works especially well indoors.

Multi-stage phasing

After grueling and lengthy training, Lemillion finally achieved complete control over his troublesome quirk. He can now limit Penetration to specific body parts and turn it on and off instantly. Such multi-stage phasing allows him to practically ignore the enemy's defense. The best example of this is during Lemilion's final fight against Overhaul.

The destructive power of major repairs is in the palm of your hand. So when he realizes that Lemillion is about to punch him, he instinctively opens his palm to stop the attack and destroy Lemillion's hand. Unfortunately for him, Lemillion simply passes over Overhaul's palm before making his fist sentient again while the rest of his hand remains intangible. As a result, his full-scale punch landed squarely in Overhaul's face.

My Hero Academia: Meta Liberation Army's Wasted Potential

The Meta Liberation Army could have been much bigger if only they had decided to do things differently.

So when Lemillion infiltrates an enemy lair and has to fight multiple enemies, he dives and moves towards the enemy standing further away from him. He will rush up behind the enemy and knock him down. He will then dive again and bounce off the floor at high speed to the nearby walls and destroy the remaining enemies.

If anyone tries to attack him or block his attacks, he'll use mulCrunchyroll.ti's phasing to get through their defenses and deliver a clean punch or kick to the face. If he has to engage in prolonged combat, he will analyze his opponent while fighting him to anticipate his actions and adjust his strategy accordingly. This is the essence of Lemillion's unique fighting style.
