War Thunder: Top 10 Mods

War Thunder already offers thrilling battles, but these mods can make it that much better.

There are pros and cons to each type of vehicle and their battles. Your choice comes down to personal preference and the type of fight you're interested in. If you've ever wanted to see a breakdown of all 3 modes in War Thunder, you're in luck because we're here for it.

What you need to know when launching War Thunder

The main screen in War Thunder shows where the tab is

Before we analyze each section of War Thunder, here are some general things you need to know about each type of vehicle.

Parameters

War Thunder is incredibly detailed and has one of the largest options sections. There, you can customize almost everything for your transportso make sure you check it out. There's even a search bar that makes things easier.

New vehicles

You get new vehicles by exploring them with dots you get from completing battles in the Research tab. However, when you first join War Thunder, one line of vehicles will be selected for you automatically, and unless you change it, you will continue to receive vehicles that you did not select yourself.

Combat rating

Combat rating is the overall rating of your vehicle for its combat capabilities. As you play, you will get more powerful cars with higher combat rating and match with similar players. But there is a catch.

Matchmaking will set you up in a group of players with a battle rating +/- 1.0 of yours the best car. This means that if you have vehicles with combat ratings of 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, and 3.0, you will be matched against players who have vehicles between 2.0 and 4.0. As you can see from our example, your overall lineup mostly has a 1+ combat rating, and if you were to join a battle with these stronger players, you wouldn't have a good time.

Play attack mode whenever you can. It's a co-op mode where you and other human players battle against AI-controlled vehicles. Playing it as a beginner gives you a great opportunity to get some extra practice and earn Silver Lions and research points for your vehicles. The first match of the day in this mode will give you a battle trophy award.

Tanks

A tank destroyer destroys a tank in a War Thunder ground battle.

Tank battles or ground battles closest to FPS in War Thunder. If you decide to jump in a tank battle, you will face high risk, high reward situations where players often kill each other with a single shot to a tank's weak point.

Although the ground combat mode is often described as tank combat, the ground combat mode has vehicles other than tanks, such as anti-aircraft guns and artillery.

Pay attention to each vehicle strengths and weaknesses through the Armor option you have on your home page. Tank destroyers/artillery usually have great armor in the front, but very little or no armor in the rear, so you want to always counter your enemies with that.

On the other hand, some tanks have very weak frontal armorso you'll want to face your enemies at an angle while controlling them.

Tank battles can be fast or slow, depending on your playstyle. However, most of the time you'll be moving around shelters, peeking behind walls, and trying to catch enemies off guard. You can't flank easily because tanks aren't that fast and small (especially early models) and there's no such thing as punishing campers. But beware how you are visible to the entire enemy army once one enemy marks you or damages you.

Airplanes

A plane destroys another plane in War Thunder air combat.

Air combat is much more skill oriented mode that puts you in a very fast-paced environment – you can quickly flank or end up close to an enemy base. Jets are much faster, so it's easier to lose track of where you are on the battlefield and find yourself alone without teammates.

A mode that requires more skill does not mean that it is not for beginners. It just means that there are other things to look out for compared to land and sea battles. Each plane has its advantages and disadvantages, which you will learn as you play.

for example dive bombers can dive straight for a ground target pointing the nose into the ground, getting close to the ground, dropping the bomb, and then flying back up. Many other aircraft, including larger bombers and fighters, would not be able to dive like that and then just fly back up. They would just crash in such a trick.

Since you won't be able to stand still like you can with tanks and ships, you'll have to think carefully about your movement as well as the speed of your plane. You can easily find yourself out of position and too close to danger.

The fun part of dogfights is that you're often tasked with destroying both ground and air targets, giving the whole match away a more real, true sense of battle. Also, being in a dogfight in the sky and trying to outwit others chasing you or shoot down a bomber destroying your base feels like an action movie in itself.

Pay attention to G force that will trigger and black out your screen if you make any sharp upward movements. It's a realistic element that is added even in arcade combat that simulates a pilot passing out from too much pressure.

Ships

A ship targets another ship in a War Thunder naval battle.

Naval battles are the only ones that divided into two paths, with blue water and coastal separable vehicles.

Coastal battles are usually fasterusing smaller and medium boats and ships that have machine guns and torpedoes. Bluewater Fleet, on the other hand, will take you into longer battles where you'll be shooting enemies miles away with powerful cannons.

Bluewater mode offers you many calculations as a player and more difficult aiming as your projectiles move faster and your loading times can often be 40 seconds or more.

One more thing worth noting large destroyer ships are quite resilientwhich means they can take a lot of shots before they sink. It gives your match is at a much slower pace (unless everyone is running around with coastal boats).

One advantage noted by veteran naval players is that Ship Battles is a great place to farm Silver Lions. If you are not familiar, then Silver Lion is the currency you get after every War Thunder match, which allows you to purchase different vehicles or parts after they have been researched.

Since sea battles have strong ships that can take a lot of shots, and you get Silver Lions every time you land a normal, critical hit, or destroy an enemy, it's natural that there's a lot of in-game currency waiting for you here.
