These cosmetic options can often also affect gameplay, giving stat bonuses that weren't otherwise available.

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered recognizes how important this choice is to fans, and features a variety of costumes to adorn protagonist Garcia Hotspur with. ​​​​​​While the original release did not include character skins, the remastering included several as extra content, each with references to other projects by Grasshopper Manufacture and Suda51. However, some are more interesting than others.

Plaza Garcia

No shirt, no problem

When you first start Shadows of the Damned, you're treated to a cutscene that showcases Garcia's impressive body tattoos. After that you play a short lesson and then his torso is covered as he grabs his signature purple jacket. In the original release, this would have been all you saw of the main character's body, but the remaster allows you to go shirtless for as long as you like with the Placa Garcia skin.

Anyone who appreciates the artistry of tattooing will be able to enjoy Garcia's ink covering the entire upper half of his body. The suit offers a closer look at Hotspur's characterization, including his neck tattoo that reads, “I'd kill the world before it harms you,” a clear reference to his love for Paula. Shirtless clothing can help you embody the exaggerated machismo of the main character, looking good while destroying demons in the underworld.

Purple reign

Stick to what works

Purple Reign is Garcia's standard outfit that he will wear throughout the campaign. He wears a rather simple ensemble with a purple leather jacket and black pants. It's not a complicated character design, but one that fits his tough guy personality effortlessly.

The name of the jacket and outfit clearly refers to the artist Prince and his multimedia project Purple Rain, which was released in 1984. In the movie poster and album cover, Prince can be seen wearing a purple jacket, which Grasshopper Manufacture was clearly inspired by when creating Garcia's look. It's an interesting reference to music history and demonstrates Court's respect for all aspects of popular culture.

Kamikaze Garcia

A gentleman in hell

This outfit may seem like an odd choice for someone who voluntarily enters the depths of Hell; a fancy suit and top hat hardly seem like clothing to wear while preparing to battle demons. However, this costume actually has roots all the way back to the planning stages of Shadows of the Damned.

The Kamikaze Garcia skin is a reference to Kurayami Dance, the creator of the manga that Suda51 wrote from 2015 to 2016. This story was based on his original ideas for the game that was to become Shadows of the Damned, but in the end EA forced Suda to create something better for it for the desired western audience. The suit and top hat are the clothes of the main character of the manga, Kamikaze Wataru.

Kamikaze Garcia is the only unlockable costume in the game, and you get it after completing the campaign for the first time.

Ocho Corazones

For super fans of The No More Heroes

Ocho Corazones outfit is definitely the most unique outfit in Hella Remastered, featuring a cape and an elaborate headpiece. Garcia's chest is covered in armor featuring the various hearts mentioned in the title, and his face is covered by a skeleton mask, reminiscent of Johnson's weapon design language.

This reference to Johnson is actually intentional, as longtime Suda fans will remember this costume appearing in Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes. In this game, Travis is transported to the world of Damned: Dark Knight, a fictional sequel to Shadows of the Damned, where Garcia dies and merges with Johnson to become the Hero with Eight Hearts. It's cool to see Hella Remastered feature this deep level of botanic knowledge, and Suda fans will surely appreciate how over-the-top the design is.

Demonio Garcia

Become one with the enemy

The Demonio Garcia skin sees our protagonist being overtaken by sworn enemies; it allows a glimpse into an alternate reality where Hotspur joins hordes of demons instead of fighting against them. Horns grow from his head, an eyeball pops out of his chest, and his arms and legs look beastly, complete with claws and scales.

It's the best costume in the game, not only because of its inspired design, but also because it's the only one that offers any in-game bonuses. Equipping Demonio Garcia will double your attack power, allowing you to bulldoze your way through infernal forces if you choose. It's the perfect choice if you want to relax and just get through the campaign or if you're just a fan of how it looks.
